Gr 10 Up-Who was Ernesto "Che" Guevara? Doctor, anarchist, adventurer, revolutionary, ambassador, saint, sinner? Born in Argentina, he grew up reading leftist history and sociology books. The death of his grandmother who had cancer influenced his decision to become a doctor. He became a doctor in 1953, and met Fidel Castro shortly thereafter. This instant friendship changed his life. In his relations with Castro, he is the hero of a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. As Cuba's ambassador, he traveled around the world to meet Kruschev, Nasser, Nehru, Tito, Mao and other world leaders. He triumphed as a leader of guerrilla warfare and was a cold-blooded revolutionary. Excellent narration accompanied by first-person testimony, interviews, archival footage, color reproductions, and still photographs combine to provide a thorough picture of Che's life. Guevara became a symbol of an entire generation and is still the subject of controversy and passion. This production would be a good addition to world civilization as well as Spanish language courses.-Diane Culbertson, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Lexington, KY

Director Dugowson's excellent biography of Che Guevara includes accounts of his family in Argentina, his trip around Latin America, the affair that politicized him, his failed involvement in Guatemala, his meeting with Fidel Castro, and his heroic involvement in the Cuban revolution. It then details Che's subsequent fiascoes in the Congo and BoliviaAcountries, by Che's own admission, not ripe for revolution. Che was intense but impulsive and, in the final analysis, had no original ideas. The film, which splices interviews and vintage footage, dispels the legend of Che GuevaraAa concoction of Regis Debray, a French philosophy student who nearly died with Che in Bolivia. This definitive film biography is recommended for the milieu it successfully evokes.AJames Dudley, Westhampton Beach, NY
