Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Human rights activist and former Miss World Lexie Brockway Potamkin gathered quotations and inspirations from hundreds of people around the world in answer to the question, "What is spirit?" Illustrated with brightly colored paintings and black and white line drawings by her dear friend Peter Max of Yellow Submarine fame, What Is Spirit: Messages from the Heart is a little book that will charm and warm you. People famous and ordinary from all religions, ages 7 to 97, took time from their busy lives to contribute. Bob Hope, Wynonna Judd, Robert Wagner, Roma Downey, Dick Gregory, and Jimmy Carter are a handful of the VIPs who responded eloquently. What I love most about this book was the way it inspired my own self-questioning--what is spirit after all? It's a lovely gift for anyone with contemplative leanings. --P. Randall Cohan

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift to give your self and others, January 4, 2000
This is a wonderful collection of thoughts and insights from various people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Ms. Brockway Potamkin captures the "spirit" both in her prose and wonderful Peter Max art work selections. I would suggest reading this book with a wonderful cup of tea and soft music. It is a gift to give yourself and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for the spiritual side of all human beings, May 8, 2000
The word "spirit" has often been traded amongst authors and readers in a very broad manner, and with a great many interpretations. While most individuals have at one time or another pondered over its meanings, we have often bypassed its deepest interpretations from fear of coming empty handed emotionally and intellectually, or from fear of being judged a "fanatic". In the most poetic and candid fashion, author Lexie Brockway has single-handedly given the world an opportunity to investigate the big question of "What Is Spirit Truly?" by letting us - the myriad of individual and secretly curious souls we all are - become the authors of her own book. In reading the very enjoyable "What Is Spirit" book, I never felt that I was imposed the point of view of one single author as is often the case; rather, I was having an intimate conversation with taxi drivers and presidents, office workers and movie stars. For the first time ever, Lexie Brockway has allowed the voices of the masses to become the author of an extremely important and often feared subject. Have a cup of tea, sit by the fire, or rest on a park bench on a delicious summer day, then read "What Is Spirit" and find out what YOU the reader, along with many others, see in this most important word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, inspiring, highly recommended., March 4, 2000
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
What Is Spirit? is a unique inquiry into how people of all faiths, backgrounds, and walks of life experience the presence of Spirit in their lives. Lexie Potamkin shares stories of the ways in which Spirit has touched the lives of a Priest, a Rabbi, nine Tibetan Monks, a United States President, a Disco Diva, and an Astronaut. What Is Spirit? brings together great minds and hearts who articulately express their feelings about Spirit. These quotes and stories from such notables as President Jimmy Carter, Robert Wagner, Gloria Steinem, Donald Trump, Tommy Lasorda, Sir John Templeton, Mother Theresa, and others are enhanced with the colorful art work of Peter Max. Highly recommended.
