Amazon.com Review

This excellent book teaches you how to use Photoshop 5 for Windows and Macintosh to do just about anything you wish. It's a technical guide, a features guide, and an artistic guide, targeting everyone from hobbyists to professionals. There are project files on the included CD-ROM for working along with the exercises in the book, so you can get hands-on experience as you read. A full-color section shows images from the book's projects as well.

In part 1, "Strolling Before Running," you learn about such computer-graphics concepts as color depth, color reduction, anti-aliasing, and interpolation. This section then teaches you how to acquire images via scanner, Photo CD, and digital camera. You become familiar with how to set your Photoshop preferences, optimize the palettes, and perform a few simple tasks using selections and layers. Part 2, "Basic Magic Using Photoshop," provides an introduction to the new features in this version and shows you how to work with selections, layers, and paths, and use various photo-retouching techniques.

In part 3, "Intermediate Magic and Photoshop," you restore old photographs; create surrealistic images; work with mixed media, such as scans of drawings, Encapsulated Post-Script (EPS) files, and screen captures; and use different color modes. You also create photorealistic composite images. Part 4, "Extended Uses for Photoshop," moves into more sophisticated compositions; a woman winds up sitting in the palm of a man's hand, and you fine-tune the results to make them look believable. You also import files, such as Illustrator images, into Photoshop and apply filters for a variety of special effects. In "Publishing and Beyond," part 5, you learn how to output to different printers, service bureaus, and film recorders and to produce Web graphics and animations.

Throughout the book, you get both step-by-step instruction and discussions of features, and you learn how to use Photoshop creatively to create, restore, and enhance a wide variety of images. Besides the project files, the CD includes fonts, images, textures, and a glossary, as well as trial versions of Extensis PageTools, PhotoFrame, Intellihance, and Mask Pro 1; Three-D Graphics' Texture Creator; and The Valis Group's Flo'. There are full versions of animation compilers, text editors, and other utilities. --Kathleen Caster

3.0 out of 5 stars Be forewarned: "Limited Edition" it is NOT, February 21, 2000
By Mark Kline (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
If you buy this book to help you with Photoshop 5.0 LE that came with your printer or scanner; you WILL have trouble following the examples. The text pertains to the FULL version of Photoshop, not the limited edition. Sometimes you can work around that, but many times the advanced features are crucial to the lesson.

5.0 out of 5 stars You want a book, but you'd rather have a mentor, right?, September 4, 1998
By A Customer
Gary Bouton and the "Inside" team decided it was time to put aside all the warmed-over Photoshop how-to materials and get down to some person to person mentoring. __ Inside Photoshop 5 is not another heavy book that simply rehashes the manual. (Although it is over 700 pages) The manner and tone of this book will teach you the solid techniques of Photoshop in a friendly way. You'll learn the processes from start to finish, in terms you can relate to and understand. This isn't a text book. Gary approaches every aspect of Photoshop as if it were a client assignment in your own studio. You learn how to approach projects and, most importantly, why. It's deep, well written, and easy to read. __ If you get one Photoshop book for version 5, make it this one. 3.0 out of 5 stars a good book to get an idea what can be done in photoshop, September 10, 1999
By A Customer
This book is a good choice as the first book to start learning Photoshop. The author does not waste time explaining layers, paths, and menus. Instead, it guides you through the sequence of increasingly complicated tasks by telling you which buttons to press to achieve the desirable effect. Initially I was very excited with the book since I had a wonderful feeling that I could do some image editing already after an hour or so after I started working with Photoshop. However, I was somewhat disappointed when after 500 pages or so I realized that many of the tools which I see on the screen were never mentioned in the book, and that I still do not always understand what is the meaning of the steps which I am doing, and what is the function of the buttons I am pressing (since the author never cared to explain). There are also some missing files on the enclosed CD, and some mistakes in the text. Hence, it is a good book to start with (if you never worked with the program before), but not an ultimate guide to Photoshop.
