Grade 3-4-A collection of loosely connected facts and observations of African wildlife. Sections of Zingg's narrative concern personal encounters with animals that he and a film crew experienced on their travels. However, readers are plunged into mid-safari at the start of the book and never learn if the travellers reach their destination. Because no map is provided, the location of the events is unclear. Bits of information about lions and other animals, such as hippos and marabou storks, appear on pages that are rarely linked by transitions. Contraditory statements, poor organization, and proofreading problems further detract from the book. A small number of average-to-poor quality, full-color photographs provide a glimpse of some, but not all, of the creatures mentioned. The bushmen are included as merely another group to be observed. In regard to them, the author comments that "Here we had come across a world that needed the help of the white man but seldom had contact with him." Enough said.
