Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-7-- This concise, well-organized text focuses on the Wounded Knee Massacre of Lakota Sioux men, women, and children in 1890, and also places this incident clearly in its historical context. Arranged in short, readable chapters with many archival photographs, the book covers Sioux settlement on the Great Plains in the early 1700s, the people's close relationship with nature, the encounters with white men who felt it their "manifest destiny" to settle the region, the reservation policies of the 19th century, the leaders of the resistance movements, the ghost-dance ceremony, and the circumstances leading up to the massacre. Although the 1973 protest of the American Indian Movement at Wounded Knee is mentioned, O'Neill concentrates on the historical incident and what led up to it. The easy-to-follow, clearly outlined account will be particularly useful for those seeking an explanation of the event, although it should also whet students' curiosity enough to make them want to read more about it, such as the adapted version of Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (Holt, 1971; o.p.) noted in the bibliography. --Yvonne Frey, Peoria Public Schools, IL
