Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreS?Five friends take a stroll through the autumn woods. These "Brave Ones" congratulate themselves on dealing with blustery winds and rustling leaves before settling down contentedly before the fireplace at home. There little Clancy, who had stayed behind, startles them with a rousing blast from his horn. The softly rounded characters resemble stuffed animals brought to life: hippo, koala, teddy bear. The woods are mildly scary, but the overriding tone of text and illustrations is reassuring. A good choice to share with preschoolers on a chilly fall day.?Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN

From Booklist
Ages 2^-4. Five brave toy animals are outside marching home through the woods. They aren't afraid of the wind (Wooo! Wooo!) or the twigs and branches (Crack! Crack!). They're big and brave, not like Little Clancy, the turtle, who's safe back at home. Then they settle indoors in front of the fire, and as they doze off, Little Clancy surprises them all with a big noise and a big scare. The watercolor-and-crayon-pencil pictures show the Brave Ones adventuring in the woods, then snuggled indoors on the dark and stormy night. The story's told with lots of action and repetition for joining in. Young children will appreciate the ending when the little creature makes his presence felt. Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars A great giggle!, October 25, 2000
By nora gilstrap (Branson, CO USA) - See all my reviews
I read this to my kindergarten class. We all loved it. The story kept their attention and they enjoyed looking for the little yellow bird in a different spot on each page. The ending is delightful. This book has fun repetitive verse, which lets the kids enjoy voicing the words with the reader. Great fun. The children are drawing names to see who takes it home next.
