Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

First published in Great Britain, this photogenic twin of the author's ASPCA Complete Dog Care Manual illustrates the differences between American and British approaches to dog training. Whereas classic American trainers like the Monks of New Skete focus on the psychology of dog/human interactions, Fogle briskly marches the reader through no-nonsense training procedures as each spread of his book is devoted to a different practical concern (e.g., "Early Learning," "Basic Equipment," "Assessing Temperament," "Fear Biting"). His techniques, which emphasize positive reinforcement and patience, are solid and clearly explained, with none of the hand-holding found in most other "complete" manuals. Woe betide the typical novice who needs immediate help with a typically rambunctious puppy--the information here, organized in bytes and paired with photos in the typical Dorling Kindersley style, will be difficult to assimilate, and the techniques are not quite as easy to implement as the text suggests (witness the six-step program to control a dog's barking). However, dog owners with some grasp of training fundamentals will find this presentation convenient and (with 350 photographs) handsome.

From School Library Journal

YA-Everything an owner needs to know is here, from a general discussion of canine mentality and temperament to detailed instructions for beginning and advanced training. Fogle's message is that kind, patient, and consistent teaching results in a well-trained, safe, and happy dog. The text is clearly worded, and the instructions are easy to follow. The photographs are ample, appealing, and well chosen to illustrate techniques or advice. An excellent companion to Fogle's ASPCA Complete Dog Care Manual (Dorling Kindersley, 1993).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for first time dog owners., October 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: ASPCA Dog Training (Paperback)
This book successfully guided my husband and I, first time dog owners, through all stages of adding a dog to our family. It offers advice on how to solve every problem we faced, and solved them conclusively. We found it indispensable. Although we had up to 7 dog training books that we had bought or taken out from the library, this was the one we always found the most helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, November 25, 1999
By Lia de Ruiter "Lia" (Scheveningen Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This book is the best book on dog training I've seen sofar. The directions are clear, with very good pictures. The method is very dog and owner friendly. The introduction is very good, the explanations and the tips are very helpful. This is a great book, and I have recommended it to a couple of friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated Guide for the First-Time Dog Owner., April 11, 2008
This book bills itself as "The easy-to-follow kind approach to training dogs of all ages."

There are more than 350 color photographs to illustrate how to get your dog to heel, crate training your pet, lie down, sit, retrieving objects, playing with others, and down and stay, to name a few. Each step of the training process is illustrated. Solutions to a wide range of canine problems, from puppy mouthing nervousness, and food guarding to changing an older dog's unwanted habits are illustrated as well.

This book also includes a section on how to choose a professional trainer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not easy on the eyes...
Basically good information included, but the format was difficult to follow, and the type so small it was really hard to read.
