Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
YA?The high-quality and beautiful, full-color images reproduced in this book are enough to make it a worthwhile purchase. Even more, though, the information about pattern, texture, form, and shape is helpful to both beginning and experienced photographers, as are the excellent examples of compositional elements; technical tips; and practical ideas relating to portrait, nature, architecture, animal, and other types of photography. Hedgecoe gives advice on lighting, camera settings, and film possibilities, and shows the final products. "Professional Tips" highlighted in each section give suggestions for troubleshooting and for enhancing already good situations. A chapter on image manipulation that illustrates some of the latest digital work being done in photography today is included. A volume that will help students develop or fine-tune their techniques.?Julia Hoffmann, R.E. Lee High School, Springfield, VA

From Library Journal
Generously illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs, this large-format book provides a broad overview of photography for amateurs and professionals alike. Beginning with a review of the camera itself and ending with a discussion on studio and darkroom equipment, this book is laden with good, practical advice for taking better portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. The text also includes sections on architectural and nature photography along with an entire chapter on image manipulation. Like Hedgecoe's other books (e.g., John Hedgecoe's Landscape Photography, LJ 7/94), his new book is very accessible, largely because of the clear writing style and excellent illustrations. The book may either be read from cover to cover or consulted as a reference work. An interesting and useful resource that should be considered a standard in public and academic libraries; highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good in depth look at photography, September 5, 1997
By A Customer
This book takes you from basic photography all the way to advanced studio work. Beautiful color photographs with descriptive text gives you information on why the photo looks the way it does

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have!, March 18, 2000
By Always learning photographer (North Carolina, USA) - See all my reviews
This book takes you through lighting, film speed, cameras, and even setting up a darkroom. I occasionally teach a photography class and use this as our manual. I love it. After reading it, I had 4 pictures published in a golf magazine using techniques I learned in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, poor explanations, September 22, 2003
By A Customer
As a beginner, I had just finished reading the excellent Understanding Exposure by Peterson and was looking for a book that explained more about composure and lighting. Although those topics are covered in this book, it is severely lacking in detail and practical information. It is filled with wonderful pictures but I think the author spent minimal time on the actual text. Perhaps that is not the emphasis of this book but it would have been nice to include more than two relatively small paragraphs (larger font size, too!) on a topic such as Balance and Proportion (pg 62). Unfortunately, this is typical of the topics in the book. On the plus side, it does cover a broad range of topics from portraits, to architecture, to nature. I also like how the author shows you the final picture and a picture or diagram of how the lighting and camera were set up. However, although the table of contents is impressive, the actual written information is lacking detail. If you are in search of a book that has to do more with how and WHY to compose or light a subject a certain way, then I suggest looking elsewhere. My own search continues.
