Editorial Reviews

Review

Many say they would never want to be a teenager again, but the projects in this book might just change your mind. (Forget quilting, I'd want to go back in time only to be able to eat as much as I want and still maintain my long-lost 32-inch waist!)
I like that Cheryl Brown offers simple, full-sized quilts using bright colors and snappy designs that keep you on your mechanical toes with techniques that include machine piecing, paper piecing, fusible and hand appliqué. None of it's too hard but you will get a well-rounded workout with cheerful results.
My real fave is the Holly Jolly Christmas quilt with its hip holly leaf appliqués. Most of these projects are suited for confident beginners and are especially enticing for your teen who needs to be coaxed to his piecing lessons.
Should you buy it? Yep, especially if you make quilts for younger females. But don't be afraid to change up the colors for either a masculine or monochromatic take--it's your quilt! --Mark Lipinski, Quilter's Home--April/May 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bright and Refreshing Take on Tradition, March 22, 2009
By daisydeadpetals (Kaysville, Utah) - See all my reviews
If you like adding a dash of happy and bright to your quilts, you'll love this book! Every time I look through the pages, I feel inspired to start a new quilt. There's a joy that comes from these quilts that's like the start of spring--so colorful, so cheerful. So refreshing!

There are eight quilt patterns to choose from. In several of the projects, traditional blocks are paired with unique appliqued elements. You've seen appliqued hearts, leaves, and flowers before, of course. But not like these! Cheryl's take on these classic quilting elements is hip, stylish, and fun. With quilt names like "Fruit Basket," "Every Blooming Thing," and "Flower Power," you can imagine that the color palettes are vivid and exciting. The projects make great use of today's bold fabrics (which I admit to sometimes buying without knowing how to use).

Cheryl Brown has a "fresh and fabulous" designing future ahead of her. I'm already looking forward to what's next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Applique and paper piecing, along with straight piecing, August 21, 2009
If you love paper piecing and appliqué, then grab a copy of this book. There are eight quilts of which only two are straight piecing, five are appliqué and one is paper piecing. This gives you a large variety of techniques in your quilt making.

The instructions contain a color photo of the finished quilt with it size and the finished block size as well. A sentence or two describes the quilt before the materials and cutting lists are given. Block assembly has graphics so you can be sure what you are reading is what you are sewing. Top assembly and finishing suggestions wind up the instructions. The templates needed are provided but some must be enlarged before you can create your quilt.

A nine page basics section provides such information as how to do appliqué and also gives several embroidery stitch types for sewing on the appliqués. The final page shows a photo of the author and a three paragraph bio.
