Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Alberto Kalach is one of the most talented architects working in Mexico City today. What makes the simple beauty of the work he has created with partner Daniel Alvarez especially remarkable is that it has managed to escape from a traditional dilemma for the city. In addition to serving the state and private business-the former demanding overblown monumentality, the latter seeking copies of what is already known and can be easily produced-the discipline of design also struggles with the burden of definition peculiar to Mexico, a nation colonized longer than most others in the Western Hemisphere.

At the urban scale, Kalach and Alvarez derive their basic vocabulary from the tradition of Corbusian and Russian constructivist slabs that, during the last two decades, were infused with a sense of memory and influenced by Italian and Spanish rationalists. At a smaller scale, Kalach and Alvarez are members of a generation of designers who use concrete, glass, and steel as a palette with which they create extremely active three-dimensional compositions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete and well edited compilation of their work., September 25, 1999
By A Customer
This volume of CWA features the best work by the Mexico City based firm headed by Arq. Alberto Kalach and Arq. Daniel Alvarez. Work included dates from 1983 to 1998 (the duration of their partnership),includes housing, residential buildings, schools, a subway station and others. All projects carry a tectonic discourse, and they stand out distinctively as "Kalach and Alvarez" within the cityscape. The designs and material treatments are extraordinary and compare to the best in the contemporary international architectural scene.

The foreword by Gonzalez de Leon and introduction by Betsky are both well written and insightful, especially to those not familiar with Mexican contemporary life and architecture. Very good book, belongs in every architects library.

Look also for more recent titles on their work (by separate)after 1998.
