Gr 9 Up-A first-rate collection of critical essays selected from a variety of sources and written over a wide time span (1940-1998). The clearly written articles, edited for this audience, average about five pages in length and cover the plot, themes, characters, motivations, and modern adaptations. The pieces express diverse views and encourage students to formulate their own interpretations. The writing is clear and less intimidating than the "Literary Criticism" series (Gale). The book also contains an annotated table of contents, a brief overview of the origins of Greek theater and early production techniques, an extensive list for further reading, and a comprehensive index. For anybody that is learning about ancient Greek theater or literature in school or is just interested in ancient Greece in general, this is a very useful book. It features many short articles by experts and covers all the major themes and ideas of Antigone, one of the greatest plays ever written.
