Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Maverick Guides carry the accurate slogan "for the independent traveler." They don't just recommend sights, accommodations, and transportation, they include all the information you'll need to arrange things on your own. And they cover much more than the major tourist attractions. Maverick's timely revision of its 1992 Berlin guide coincides with the city's recent reemergence as a popular tourist destination. This detailed guide is arranged by neighborhood and provides historical and cultural information, suggested sights to visit, and a listing of lodgings and restaurants. Although it lacks the cultural emphasis and high production values of the Knopf City Guide, Berlin (1998) and the Michelin Green Guide Berlin Potsdam (1997), it is still wonderful: current, well rounded, and informative. Likewise, Maverick's guide to Scotland offers lots of detail (including glossaries of regional speech and listings of local tourist information centers). The author, a native of Scotland and a contributor to the Chicago Tribune, brings a wealth of knowledge to her subject, especially about the country's small towns and villages. Scotland is often just a chapter in guides to the whole of Great Britain, which makes the in-depth Maverick guide an especially wise purchase. Both titles are recommended for public libraries.AMegan S. Farrell, Univ. of Southwestern Louisiana Lib., Lafayette
