Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 & Up--A collection of 50 short pieces, mostly a few pages in length, aimed at young actors. The monologs feature characters from 10 years old to their mid 20s and are divided into sections for males and females. The selections are mostly from unpublished plays or workshop pieces, "thus discouraging students from relying upon the already-existing literary or dramatic context of the selections." The entire plot is purposely not given, allowing the actors the freedom to interpret their characters' motivations. Helpful notes set the scene, describe the character speaking, and offer acting suggestions and common pitfalls to avoid. Many of the choices deal with dark, deep issues, although there are some comic ones, and there are a few instances of swearing, generally in keeping with the character's personality. Overall, a good source of lively material that will challenge and stretch budding thespians.

Product Description

This anthology contains fifty monologues selected from the work of contemporary English-speaking playwrights for young students and actors 10 to 24 years. The collection is equally divided between male and female characters, and also contains a variety of pieces for students-of-colour. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for student actors, January 10, 2003
Roger Ellis has gathered a collection of new and challenging monologues for young actors. High school and college students will find these monologues particularly useful for competition and audition purposes. This volume would make an excellent addition to any student actors collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for schools with strong drama departments, January 3, 2002
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This Audition Monologs For Student Actors II has recently produced modern plays and will appeal to student actors from grades 7-10. Many scripts and scenes are for women and minority actors, outlining social issues and insights which will reach a wide age range from 10 to into one's twenties. Recommended for schools with strong drama departments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Big Smashing Hit!, January 3, 2002
By A Customer
This is an outstanding book of monologs for actors of all ages! You want to get that choice part? Use the pieces from this book to land it with ease. Never before has such a great selection been put together. Pay particular attention to FISHING THE MOON by Scott McMorrow, A GENIUS by Dori Appel, and MEMORY GLAND by Lynne Elson.
