On December 8, 2004, the grain ship Selendang Ayu went aground at Skan Bay of Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Chain. The accident sent 336,000 gallons of oil and 66,000 tons of soybeans into the waters and onto the shores of the island. State and federal agencies immediately sprang into action to minimize the damage and loss of life caused by the wreakage and the spill. This is the story of their efforts and what they, and we, can learn from this disaster.
