5.0 out of 5 stars Resourceful, August 23, 2005
By J. Benson (Marshall, MI USA) - See all my reviews

I have purchased Moon Handbooks in the past for other out-of-state trips I've taken, and found them to be extremely helpful. In fact, I've been so pleased w/ the content that I now use them to research and help me plan my trip. Aside from having great information on lodging, restaurants, and parks, the historical background is also very accurate and helpful. While they don't go into a great deal of historical depth, the authors are very knowledgeable and give you enough history to help you decide if you want to learn more. From a handbook, I feel that's all you can expect.

Overall, I rate this Handbook very highly. I appreciate the discount lodging section, and have been able to stay in many <$50/night motels which are both clean and well-maintained. I've also purchased the Moon Handbooks for Montana and Washington in the past, and they've also been excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the nature lover in you, November 26, 2006
By Gadget Girl (San Pedro, CA) - See all my reviews
This is a good book for those that plan to spend most of their trip on the trail, or in the national, state, and local parks. It is also great for those that like to stay in a nice hotel and look out their windows at nature and wonder what's out there. In this way, the book should be an addition to your information that you gather before going to Oregon. Frommers is a good companion book. Between the two should give you enough information to make good decisions on where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. It is an accurate guide with resources for more information. We went to Oregon and stayed in just about every lodging type there is - hotel, motel, lodge, b&b, vacation home, and cabin. Moon was a handy companion the whole time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of Date, September 19, 2006
By H. Davis (California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Moon Handbook for Oregon, sixth edition, is packed with interesting information and history about areas throughout Oregon. Includes scenic pictures and some nice black and white street maps of various cities with points of interest labeled. The book is broken into regions (Portland, Willamette Valley, Coastal Oregon, etc.), which makes referencing handy when traveling through an area. Also has a nice index at the back.

My primary complaint is that the book does not appear to be current. Although the publishers date on Amazon indicates that the sixth edition was released in 2004, the price estimates for lodging and attractions were significantly off, noteworthy hotels and restaurants built since 2002 were not mentioned, and several restaurants were closed.

Overall a good reference for location, things to see, weather, outdoor recreation and sights. Just take with a grain of salt that the price quotes and lists are current or complete. I'm hanging on to my 2006 AAA tourbook for current(though less detailed)information on lodging, dining and attactions in Oregon.
