Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with Sheila Wyborny's The Aztec Empire.

Gr. 4-6. The Life during the Great Civilizations series focuses on such everyday matters as clothes, housing, jobs, and the social organizations of the time. The authors also look at the more sticky subjects of religion, especially in the book about the Aztecs, which deals with the topic of human sacrifice, though not in a salacious way. Veteran writer Nardo admits that ancient Persia is a challenge for historians because little is known about the ordinary people's lives and customs; most of the available information deals with the upper classes. Even with this caveat, Nardo is able to enlighten readers about Persian society and the different ways of life. Though Wyborny never discusses how information has been gathered about the Aztecs, she puts the wealth of knowledge to good use, explaining how the Aztecs lived and the strides they made in areas such as medicine. Both of these compact books have well-chosen color photographs and excellent sidebars. Good curriculum support; short notes, a glossary, and a bibliography are appended. Ilene Cooper

Review

"This series belongs in every elementary and middle school because it fills a niche for this topic at this age group. Numerous color illustrations, larger-than-usual font size, and plenty of white space help younger readers not be intimidated by the content...Any teacher who includes ancient cultures in his class work will welcome these historically accurate and attractive volumes as adjuncts to classroom instruction. They can also be used with younger gifted students who might select these volumes simply because they are so visually attractive, but once they begin to read the content will lead some into a new old world. I found the series useful for at-risk high school students. The series summarizes basic information on a reading level below regular high school, and in such an interesting manner that students did not object to reading them. Highly recommended."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well done, December 23, 2004
This is the only book for kids I know of out there that provides information about life in one of the more important ancient civilizations- Persia, and it's extremely well done. I recomend it.
