A testament to the healing power of art therapy, Kansas artiste naif Layton (1909-93) discovered contour drawing in 1977?after 13 years of shock treatments. In the following years, she produced 1200 self-portraits, culminating in a Smithsonian exhibition in 1992. Layton is a Grandma Moses with an edge. Her detailed, fine-line drawings poignantly and humorously express the effects of old age and depression on relationships, particularly marriage.
