Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
A testament to the healing power of art therapy, Kansas artiste naif Layton (1909-93) discovered contour drawing in 1977?after 13 years of shock treatments. In the following years, she produced 1200 self-portraits, culminating in a Smithsonian exhibition in 1992. Layton is a Grandma Moses with an edge. Her detailed, fine-line drawings poignantly and humorously express the effects of old age and depression on relationships, particularly marriage. Nearly 100 engaging works are featured in this tribute. Many include wry commentary by this unassuming artist, and Lambert, a Layton associate and champion since 1977, contributes a laudatory, uncritical introduction and epilog. The work's appeal extends beyond regional interest to earn a place in strong U.S. art and culture collections.?Russell T. Clement, Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville

5.0 out of 5 stars A look at Mrs. Layton's later years thru her art., December 7, 1998
This is an intense but humorous look at how "grandma Layton" learned to help herself through severe depression by doing contour drawings of herself. She expresses her feelings with great detail in her drawing and as she begins her recovery her work grows in magical ways.
