Adobe Photoshop Creative Techniques takes a unique approach to teaching artists new techniques. Each two-page spread focuses on one task and presents a picture of the final artwork, comments on what the goal is, tips on real-world applications for the task at hand, references to related techniques discussed elsewhere in the book, and step-by-step instructions on accomplishing the task.
There are sections on painting, retouching, and drawing; working with selections, layers, and channels; doing image and color correction; understanding resolution, color, and pre-press issues; working with type; and using various file formats. This book refers to an earlier version of the software, Photoshop 3.0 for the Macintosh. Nonetheless, it offers lots of good advice, whether or not you've upgraded to 4.0. One thing you won't find, though, is advice on creating Web graphics.
