Review

Cavalletti’s…book helps us to reflect on how those insightful catechetical moments reveal the spiritual potential of the older child. -- Liturgical Catechesis, Vol. 7, No. 4, Aug-Sept 04, Cathy Marbury

It describes an approach to the religious education of children…in an atmosphere of freedom and prayer. -- Ministry & Liturgy, Vol. 31, No. 7, Sept 04, Laurice Bonannella

She is not proposing a catechism program, per se, but a way of teaching and letting the children learn themselves. -- Crux of the News 2002

Product Description

Here is the continuation of The Religious Potential of the Child (from 3 to 6 years old). The author, Sofia Cavalletti, the founder of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, describes an approach to the religious education of children according to the methods of Maria Montessori. In this book Cavalletti draws on her long experience with children from diverse cultures and environments to describe the vital religious needs of the older child (6 to 12 years old). The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for children age 6 to 12 builds on the foundation in scripture and liturgy offered to the 3- to 6-year-old child. The theme of the covenant between God and humankind, first revealed to the people of Israel, is expanded to include all of history, from Creation to the Parousia, the second coming of Christ. For the older child, awareness of participation in this covenant relationship leads spontaneously to a sense of moral responsibility and of engagement with the cosmos in all its manifestations. This book will be a great help to educators and catechists seeking to understand the characteristics of the older child, particularly the childs relationship with the mystery of God. Even those not familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will find in these pages wisdom and insight into the religious life and needs of older children. Published by Liturgy Training Publications.

4.0 out of 5 stars Montessori religion at its best, February 24, 2009
A wonderful introduction to the spiritual development of young children and explanation of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd/Montessori religion program. A little light on specifics, but invaluable nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the second level Catechist, November 24, 2008
By light october (southern USA) - See all my reviews
This book is a prescription for the second level (ages 6-9) Catechist of the Good Shepherd program. It is Montessori based and adaptable beyond the Catholic base it prescribes. Please consider it, whatever your orientation, as it introduces the Plan of God for all children, Catholic or not. It introduces the trifold timeline in which we all live (Chist is born, Christ has risen, Crist will come again). The book emphasizes the role each child has in the Plan of God and how he can participate. This book is adaptable for evangelicals, but made to order for liturgical Christians.
