Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Chock full of practical advice for those actually intending to visit France, this video will entertain vicarious travelers as well. Series host Rick Steves is joined by his Francophile friend Steve Smith in this 50-minute four-day tour of Paris and the northeastern regions of Alsace and Champagne. Steves provides generous dollops of history (i.e., "Here's where Louis the XIV lost his head," "Here's where Hitler marched") while the camera takes in current scenery. The usual highlights of Paris--Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower--are covered, and you go on a jaunt through the city's famed underground sewer system and a market trip down Rue Cler with the owner of one of Smith's favorite restaurants. The pair travel to the German-influenced Alsace to eat sauerkraut with fine sauces and sample wine in the land that gave us Albert Schweitzer. Then it's on to Champagne to visit Verdun, witness the landmarks commemorating the stunning loss of life in WWI, and later to the Reims Cathedral which sports Gothic spires and a stained-glass window by Marc Chagall. --Kimberly Heinrichs

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful video!, April 2, 2001
By A Customer
I really enjoy this video more everytime I watch it. It is packed with helpful tips on traveling in Europe, European history, some art history, and humor. The quality of the photography is very good. This will get you excited about traveling! Rick Steves is more "in the box" than some, but he goes for what the majority of travelers will want to see. Excellent for experienced and inexperienced travelers!
