Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Zone Diet displays more endurance than other fads for weight maintenance. Russ Klettke and dietitian Deanna Conte have combined forces to make this sort of regimen more appealing to today's male who is still somewhat embarrassed or intimidated by recipes. A Guy's Gotta Eat recommends to its readers a lifestyle that carefully weighs protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake. Avoiding the exactitude of standard recipes, Klettke's method for preparing foods calls for approximations such as "large spoonful," fearing that precision frightens guys. A dose of French-bashing panders to current politics. Mark Knoblauch

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe one of the worst, April 11, 2004
There are so many other books about diet and exercise that are better than this one. It makes one wonder how it ever got published in the first place...maybe the catch title, I don't know. I liked what one reviewer said...if you're a gym bunny, you can pretty much eat anything you want and stay slim. Eating healthy is all about being simple...just look at any of the popular diet/exercise books. Broiling or boiling is all pretty simple, and unless you choose to make a complicated dish, most food that you cook in your house is certainly easy enough to do. The last reviewer talks about making the book a gift...actually several have. Diets and exercise are personal goals, not goals that are ascribed to someone through a gift. I think there is an infinite array of books out there that better suit a nutrition program than this dog of a book. Lastly, I would have to say that there was not enough variety in the food part to sustain a program over an extended period.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Guy Can Getta Better Opinion, April 15, 2004
In the opening for Part One, the author asks the question, "Have you ever wondered why there are so many different theories on weigh control and weight managment? It's because no one knows for sure". You can stop reading there. Neither does this author who claims to be a self taught nutritionist. He takes that "no one knows for sure" and trumps his own plan as the new gold standard. We need John Stossel to run another GIVE ME A BREAK! program on this book! Since "no one knows for sure" how the earth was created, maybe I'll take my high school science knowledge and write my own book. I read the book, but don't believe there was ONE single new fact that hasn't been droned on about over and over again. Not one. You really can't use the book as a weight management plan for a diet because there's just really not enough in there. But for laughs, please go look at the index. Was this drawn out to make the book thicker? Every word is basically referenced with all the pages where it appeared. I think I get more VALID information in the occasional magazine article about diet and nutrition...and plus, you get a VARIETY of varying ideas. If you want a total program, stick with something like South Beach which you can actually FOLLOW. I want my money back.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not one single thing you haven't heard 1000 times, April 20, 2004
By Darnell Rigby (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
That was my biggest disappointment. Nothing was new...and the recipes, although touted as easy could be a litle cumbersome, and the recipes couldn't consitute an overall program. So I was left trying to figure out what the book was trying to do, or was it trying to do too many things. Was it trying to be a synopsis of a bunch of Ladies'Home Journal articles on losing weight? And although the author states that good eating = no dieting, nutrition is not really that simplistic. Even in his own case, although he alleges he is a triathlete, he doesn't even figure in that that type of extreme competition might have a little to do with staying in shape...it was just all eating right = no dieting. A wrong message to be sending too many people. Shame.
