Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Most people believe that stalkers only target the rich and famous, not the average citizen. The truth is, stalking is one of the most prevalent yet overlooked forms of domestic violence in America today, with an estimated 1.4 million people nationwide stalked each year. And that figure does not even include the rising number of people being harassed on the Internet.

Surviving a Stalker, the ultimate practical guidebook to surviving stalking, provides all the necessary tools you need to handle obsessive attention and to regain control of your life. Journalist and stalking expert Linden Gross offers a wealth of invaluable guidance, including:

* How to recognize and control those natural reactions that might put you at risk; * How to handle inappropriate attention on- and off-line and break the stalking cycle; * How to protect your privacy and safety as well as that of your loved ones.

Gross explains how these dangerous obsessions begin, the patterns they take, and what potential victims can do before the nightmare becomes a reality. Through a multitude of case studies, medical and other professionals who deal with stalking will gain a clearer understanding of the crime, the toll it takes, and how to handle it. Surviving a Stalker will help all victims, as well as potential victims, keep themselves safe and be a vital resource for all professionals who counsel them.

About the Author
Linden Gross, the former special features editor for the Los Angeles Times Magazine, is a national bestselling author and freelance journalist who has written for Ms., Cosmopolitan, and Reader's Digest. An expert on the stalking of ordinary people, she is the founder of the Stalking Victim's Sanctuary, a Web site which garners 3,000-5,000 hits a week and features an on-line support group.

4.0 out of 5 stars Supportive and sustaining, January 28, 2001
By A Customer
Anyone who's been the victim of unwanted attention can relate to the stories in this book - some are truly horrendous, but knowledge IS power, and I definitely felt more empowered after reading this book! The bad news is that there frequently are no easy answers - the GOOD news is that you are not alone and the answers, though not easy, DO EXIST! Although I prefer Gavin deBecker's book THE GIFT OF FEAR, this book is a welcome addition to increasing one's information resources and sense of protection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something Everyone Should Know, February 14, 2007
By Jeanette Hw Chan (Point Roberts, WA United States) - See all my reviews

This book has a lot of useful information, and is good to have even when you're not being stalked. It helps you see how the stalker thinks, and how to protect yourself, your family, co-workers and friends. There is another book that would work well with this, that keeps things a little more updated - Stalking the Stalker. In general, most women don't realize that not being clear and concise with their wishes because of discomfort levels can lead to even more problems later on. This book should also be read with The Gift of Fear by Gavin deBecker. I highly recommend it in the process of keeping yourself and your loved ones safe!

I think that one should make their decisions according to their situation, but being aware of possible repercussions from things like restraining orders, etc. is an important part of a decision.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is a great tool , November 21, 2006
I would highly recommend this book as it certainly outlines the dynamics involved in stalking cases and how the individual victim can be proactive in their own protection. I have read many reviews in regards to books on stalkers, and many so called professionals continue to minimise the value of this information. As a Professional counsellor who deals with many cases of stalking and interpersonal violence I have read these same books and find them useful, as do many of my clients in assisting in the process of healing after the event and protection before it occurs. Any book on stalking and protection of violence that comes with Gavin Debeckers seal of approval is certainly a must read for me and this is no exception.

3.0 out of 5 stars This might scare you more than help you.
This book is very well researched, but it largely consists of horrific true stories of stalkings. I don't know how helpful this will be if you are being stalked. Read more
