Filmed in the 1980s, these classic Stratford Festival television productions are timeless. The style is Gilbert and Sullivan "lite," with much mugging, a few interpolated Canadian references, clever sets, sprightly dancing, and comic orchestrations. The Mikado fares best, with its troupe of truly funny players. Pirates will seem overcute?and overchoreographed?to some. Iolanthe, possibly the least known, gets a campy treatment. The casts include Canadian national treasures Maureen Forrester and Eric Donkin, who has a wicked way with a patter song. Though not for the purist (the voices are mostly adequate and seem dubbed), these productions preserve the spirit of G&S and should be popular and much-used.
