4.0 out of 5 stars A Little History on This Project, November 23, 2005

First off, yes, the promised Dark Horse version of this tale does not exist and it seems increasingly unlikely that it will. Hopefully Steranko, the greatest comix innovator of the '60s and '70s, will turn his talents to new material instead!

However you CAN obtain "Chandler: Red Tide" because the Dark Horse version was simply to be a revision of the "illustrated novel" Steranko created in 1976 for the "Fiction Illustrated" series of Byron Preiss Visual Publications/Pyramid Books.

The 1976 version is a crackerjack noir tale illustrated with Steranko's stunning mature artwork. Not exactly a comic strip, it's a Prince Valiant-style cartoon with art panels that illustrate blocks of text. It would be perfect if the art carried the story more, presenting visual clues and providing important visual details, but the pictures, although fabulous, just support the text.

"I have 72 hours to live," a desperate client tells Chandler, a private investigator. The hard-boiled PI must track down the witnesses to a mob hit - but the witnesses are also getting hit and Chandler's old flame is also in danger of being snuffed out!

James Steranko, also a magician and musician, entered the field of comic books in 1966, rapidly establishing a reputation as a major graphics innovator. He was most famous for his work on "Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD," which appeared in Marvel Comics comic book "Strange Tales." In 1969 he formed his own publishing company, Supergraphics, and in 1970 he gave up drawing comic books, although he continued to create cover illustrations for comic books and paperbacks through the '90s.
