Editorial Reviews

Product Description
David Daniel's theory is this: you play the players, not the cards, emphasizing your strategy and attitude. This book contains valuable advice on the game for both beginner and "expert." Daniel teaches how to know yourself and your opponent. This includes keeping one's ego in check long enough to walk away from a more skilled opponent while at the same time learning how to beat the people who have been beating you. This book also includes practical advice like how and why to avoid playing with friends, and why certain strategies are bound to fail.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great foundation for poker, May 5, 2000
By A Customer
I first read this book as a poker novice, now after playing 2 years of home games and some casino hold'em and stud, a rereading of this book has helped me even more than the first time. Daniels' personal experiences make it entertaining while very informative. His points are made using real life as well as theoretical examples. The best part about this poker book is that it gives you the answer for every "when do I do this" question in poker...that answer: it depends! Daniels will train you on how to what factors to consider when playing poker at any level. I think I could go for a 3rd reading!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings, March 30, 2002

I feel very mixed about this book. On the one hand the author's smug writing style and arrogant assumption of superiority grate (TJ Cloutier is a world champion and he doesn't write this arrogantly!). On the other hand, the book does offer some good advice on poker psychology and the attitudes one needs to win. It can also be quite amusing in places when Daniel tells some of his own poker annecdotes. I guess I'd say, if you have a tiny poker library and are looking to expand, this is probably not the book to go to; but if you already have most of the basic books, this could be a useful place to expand your perspectives.

2.0 out of 5 stars not so great, November 27, 2002

I've read worse, but that's not exactly a recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A more personal guide to playing poker
As one who makes his living playing poker, I can honestly say this is a poker book like no other. It is no replacement for the basic literature on poker strategy. Read more
