Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

The 105th mayor of New York City takes on the 107th mayor of New York City in this recycling of Kochs newspaper columns from 1994 to the present. (Hizzoner has been taking on Hizzoner in the pages of the Daily News since the latter took office.) After taking credit in his prologue for helping Giuliani get elected, Koch rapidly goes from acknowledging Giulianis achievements (such as a drastically lowered crime rate) to criticizing him as an authoritarian publicity hound who cant admit when hes made a mistake. The columns touch on everything from Giulianis confrontation with schools chancellor Ramon Cortines early in his first term to more recent controversies such as the polices brutal killinig of the unarmed Amadou Diallo. The mayors enemies might welcome yet another opportunity to nod their heads in agreement about this ``nasty man.'' -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Product Description

In the pantheon of politicians people love to hate, Rudy Giuliani is number one. But how much Rudy-bashing is mindless, and how much is meaningful? Former New York City mayor Ed Koch answers that question in Giuliani: Nasty Man, which chronicles Giuliani's two terms in office from the vantage point of a man qualified to judge a Big Apple mayor's performance. Koch exposes Giuliani's nastiness as an impediment to effective governing. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A keen-minded examination of flaws that deserve inspection, especially in a presidential candidate., January 5, 2008
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Giuliani: Nasty Man (Paperback)
Giuliani: Nasty Man is a collection of articles that Democrat and former New York City mayor Ed Koch wrote about Rudy Giuliani in the late 90's. When Koch first assembled Giuliani: Nasty Man, Rudy was considering running for Senator against Hillary Clinton; now that Rudy has presidential ambitions, Giuliani: Nasty Man is in a new edition revealing Giuliani's darker side. Koch does not shy from acknowledging Giuliani's successes, notably his role in a drastic reversal of the downward crime spiral that took place under Mayor Dinkins' inept watch and his strong leadership in the wake of the September 11th attacks. Yet Giuliani: Nasty Man reveals the side of Giuliani's politics and attitude that is not so photogenic - from his less-than-stellar response to incidents of police killing unarmed immigrant Diallo or sadistically torturing a detainee, to his questionable crackdowns on peaceful dissent, to his hubris in dismissing the positive labors of his predecessors while relentlessly extolling his own. A keen-minded examination of flaws that deserve inspection, especially in a presidential candidate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God someone exposes the Jesse Helms of the North!, September 29, 1999
By A Customer
Ed nails the Fuhrer! From his earliest heinous misteps, this lisping loser of a mayor has proven that New York is still home to aliens! Koch has nailed him in print like so many others have done from the op-ed pages to talk radio. It's funny Rudy labels Hillary Clinton a carpetbagger, when he understands so little about the heart & soul of the greatest city in the country. From trying to arrest jaywalkers, to driving all the old New York cabbies out of business, to trying to regulate picnics in Central Park, and now wanting to censor the art at the Brooklyn Museum, Giuliani has proven how far removed he is from the essence of this city. Hitler "cleaned up" Germany, too. Thank God he's leaving, and woe be the nation if this monster gets a vote in the U.S. Senate! Way to go, Ed! You're doin' great! Keep at it so we don't all have to be embarassed by this baffoon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guiliani's Past is Contemptible, May 26, 2000
By A Customer
For those of you readers who do not agree with Ed Koch's opinions in this courageous book, I suggest you read a 1987 publication " THE PROSECUTORS" by James B. Stewart WSJ. The damage done by Giuliani to the careers of his former associates reveals the true nature of his ambitions.
