Splendidly designed and generously illustrated, this catalog hints at the excitement in store for those attending the exhibition of original illustration for children's books currently at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, and later at the Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington. Informative essays, written by curators Michael Patrick Hearn, Trinkett Clark, and H. Nichols B. Clark, explore four major themes--alphabets and nursery rhymes; myths, fables, and fairy tales; stories for young listeners and readers; and adolescent adventures and mysteries--through the works of yesterday's masters, such as Howard Pyle and N. C. Wyeth, as well as such contemporary giants as Maurice Sendak and Chris Van Allsburg. For those unable to experience the comprehensive survey on-site, this book, which showcases most of the best American illustrators in the last 100 years (with the surprising omission of such favorites as Steven Kellogg, Tomie dePaola, and David Macaulay), provides a visual journey that informs as it inspires.
