Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Drawing on interviews with doctors and several patient histories, alternative health writer Marohn (Natural Medicine First Aid Remedies) recommends natural medicine and a controlled diet as "cures" for children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). While examining environmental factors, pollution, and vaccines as possible causes for ASD is perfectly valid, Marohn posits that they are the main causes and, in turn, provides an unbalanced and unsound approach to treatment. The 14 alternatives that she suggests (e.g., targeted therapeutic nutrition, homeopathy) are rarely supported by more than anecdotal evidence and create unrealistic expectations. Marohn ignores behavioral, speech, and occupational therapies, which are considered critical to the successful treatment of children with ASD. In addition, she makes the ludicrous assertion that preventing autism is as easy as disregarding physicians and protecting your child from our toxic environment. Marohn risks shifting blame for the rise in ASD back to the parents, who supposedly control their child's environment. A better choice for libraries is Mitzi Waltz's Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Understanding the Diagnosis and Getting Help, which presents a more evenhanded section on alternative remedies. Not recommended.

Product Description
Autism is now an epidemic in the United States and in much of the world, rising by as much as 1000% in some areas. The Healthy Mind Guide: Reversing Autism explores why and offers effective treatment options and the possibility of a positive outcome via natural medicine therapies that can ameliorate or reverse the disorder in many cases.

Part I of the book covers the basics of autism—what it is and what causes it. The book includes discussion of the following factors that are often involved in the disorder: vaccines, heavy metal toxicity, nutritional deficiencies/imbalances, food allergies, digestive problems and fungal overgrowth, viruses or viral overload, immune dysfunction, problems in the birthing process, and energetic legacies from unresolved family issues in previous generations.

A chapter in the book is also devoted to the deeper question of what makes a child susceptible to autism—after all, not all children who are vaccinated develop autism, for example. Included in this discussion is the work of William J. Walsch, Ph.D., whose latest research may well have pinpointed the genetic component of autism that has previously eluded scientific inquiry.

In addition to the biochemical therapy practiced by Dr. Walsh, Part II of the book covers a range of natural medicine treatments for autism. These are advanced therapies that demonstrate the comprehensive healing potential in the field, and include treatments to eliminate allergies, integrate children’s listening and learning skills, nutritional supplements to correct imbalances, cranial osteopathy to reverse birth trauma, and many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Alternative to Psychotherapeutic Medicines, January 6, 2003
By Vicky Edgett (Flower Mound, TX United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Being a parent of an autistic 14 year old, this book has been a lifesaver. We are doing one of the options that is listed in the book after much research. The book triggered an option that we have not considered before. Our son has been aggressive since starting puberty. The natural medicine alternatives is allowing us to wean him off his medicines. I have been a PICU nurse for 22 years and believe in the medical field. As a mom who has tried everything, I believe in the alternatives especially if they work. All medicines have untoward side effects and never a cure. I wish this book was written ten years ago when our son was young for him to have a chance of full recovery. A must read book for everyone with a child with autism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Service, December 8, 2002
By A Customer
Stephanie Marohn has done the autism community a great service. Considering autism is by and large an iatrogenic disease it is Stephanie's great luck never to have received formal training in medicine. In place of the common medical text where much is written and little said, Stephanie researches and reports on the underlying causes, and most importantly, on those rare physicians and practitioners who are safely and effectively treating autism.

Rarely has a disease been held hostage by the medical establishment to such a degree. Instead of psychiatric punditry and academic sophistry "The Natural Medicine Guide to Autism" provides parents, families, and professionals a ready reference to those individuals and protocols making a difference.

Children with autism do recover. Flat-earth physicians mired in the teaching and practice of hopelessness and prescription medications do not help. As a parent I know the road is bumpy and difficult. It is a road littered with obstacles from outdated theories to ongoing medical practices.

You can make a difference in your child's life. Read this book and let one criteria be your guide when following any of the protocols. Is my child better today than yesterday? There is every chance the answer will be yes.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice compliation of alternative approaches to treating ASD, October 2, 2003
By Lisa Ackerman (Newport Beach, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a good book for parents as an overview of alternative treatments for ASD children. Note, it contains some approaches not all approaches of alternative medicine. I would sincerely recommend this book but if you are a parent looking at all alternatives, including Children with Starving Brains by Dr J. McCandless as well. These two books will provide you all the information you need in evaluating next steps with a good, thoughtful, forward thinking doctor.
