Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Bond for Life celebrates the rich and complex bond between people and their pets around the world and throughout time. Using captivating and evocative photographs, together with inspiring quaotations taken from literature and from life, the book explores the whole range of emotions felt by people about their pets. The book begins with a comprehensive review of the history of animals as part of human life from ancient times to the present day. It charts the evolution of the domestication of some animals, in particular dogs and cats, and traces the gradual shift in their primary function from working animals and objects of worship to much loved pets kept purely for companionship and pleasure. In addition, the astonishing beneficial effects pets can have on the well-being and emotional development of children and adults alike are explored, from lowering blood pressure to increasing independence. The evocative imagery and carefully selected quotations appeal to the senses and speak touchingly of the lasting and profoundly positive effects that pets have had on our lives. Although cultural differences in attitudes emerge, the sheer universality of human emotions and the special relationship enjoyed between people and their pets around the globe is striking.
