Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Cyclothymia is a mood disorder characterized by cycling periods of hypomania-unusual emotional highs-and periods of mild to moderate depression. The condition is similar to the better known bipolar disorder, but cyclothymics never experience episodes of full mania or deep depression. In order for a therapist to diagnose someone with cyclothymia, the cycling of moods must continue for at least two years. Since the emotional episodes of cyclothymics tend to be more mild, they often go undiagnosed and untreated. Clinical studies have demonstrated, though, that leaving these symptoms untreated carries a particular risk: between 15 and 50 percent of cyclothymia sufferers will eventually develop a diagnosable bipolar disorder.

This book, the first written specifically to cyclothymia sufferers, helps readers learn more about this condition. It explores hereditary and stress-related possible causes of the disorder, as well as the history of the condition and its treatment. The book offers exercises to help readers recognize their emotional cycles and any conditions that might trigger changes from one phase to another. The book introduces readers to cognitive behavioral techniques that are effective at limiting and controlling shifting moods. Later chapters explore treatment options-medical and psychotherapeutic-and offer advice on how to manage relationships when one partner suffers from cyclothymia.

From the Publisher

This book provides specific strategies for coping with roller-coaster mood swings. Cyclothymia, a milder but still debilitating mental illness similar to bipolar disorder, finally has its own self-help trade book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Group Therapy Sessions, October 12, 2005
The "Cyclothymia Workbook" fits perfectly into my Mood Disorders - Therapy Group Discussions. It is written in simple enough text to help our consumers understand the meaning of a mood disorder and how to cope with the symptoms. The examples, case studies, and charts are easy to incorporate into a group setting.

I think there is a lot of good information in this workbook and I am not knocking it at all, but the only time I am interested in charting my moods, which the workbook wants me to do on a daily basis, is when I am down, down, down. How long have I been like this?? Where is the light at the end of the tunnel??? That sort of mood. When I am middle to up, however, I am way too happy and enjoying life to write in some boring chart about my mood! I decided on an emoticon way to keep track on a regular wall calendar with happy faces, straight faces, sad faces, angry faces, and umbrellas for when it's just dark and dismal no matter what I am doing. Even that gets tedious, though.

I appreciate the author's way of telling people to consult a psychiatrist and consider meds as well, but here in So. Cal where I live, an appt with a psych has to be made 9 months ahead of time for an opening. Not too practical.
