"....Full of practical information and suggestions....A valuable resource that should not be missed...." --Youth Today

"This book is a comprehensive guide that allows the reader to tailor the program to meet his or her specific needs. The author provides step-by-step instructions and a variety of examples for all of the techniques provided....This book would be especially useful in planning a parenting program since the author provides instructional methods and goals for each topic covered....Overall, this book would be beneficial to school psychologists who have the opportunity to provide parent training and/or family therapy. A psychologist within a school setting might also apply the techniques within the classroom." --Communique

Practitioners and parents who seek effective treatments for children with behavior disorders will find a variety of useful ideas in this well-written, empirically informed book. The treatments described here, based on evidence from outcome research with children and families, address such common problem areas as social skills, academic performance, self-esteem, and rule-following. Dr. Bloomquist uses his skills as clinician and writer to good effect, creating clear, highly readable descriptions of tested methods; he also documents the research support for these methods and explains their theoretical basis. A particular strength of this work is its extensive collection of practical resources for parents and therapists--examples of behavior contracts and daily behavior charts, child self-monitoring systems, helpful self-talk for young people, techniques for managing parental stress, and family problem solving worksheets, including techniques for dealing with anger and conflict. Dr. Bloomquist, who is both a researcher and a clinician, wears both hats in this work, making the findings of treatment research highly accessible to a wide audience of potential beneficiaries -- John Weisz, Ph.D., Dept of Psychology, University of California at Los Angeles

Review
"Skills Training for Children with Behavior Disorders is an eminently practical and intellectually honest text by a well-respected scientist-practitioner. Michael's thorough knowledge of the field of childhood disorders, combined with his sensitivity and insight, has resulted in a very thorough, practical guide for parents and the mental health clinicians with whom they work.

"For parents, the text is well organized into specific issues and problems, offering easy to follow guidelines and suggestions. For clinicians the literature reviews are thorough, concise and up-to-date. The treatment model follows logically from the scientific data reviewed.

"I believe this text will make a significant contribution to the parent training field for children with disruptive problems." --Sam Goldstein, Ph.D., Neurology Learning & Behavior Center, Salt Lake City, Utah

"This book provides a wealth of helpful, concrete tips which parents can use to self-evaluate their parenting, and which can provide direction for their parenting goals and parenting practices. The sections on problem-solving and social skill training for children are nicely detailed, and could be easily used by practicing clinicians." --John E. Lochman, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Associate Professor of Psychology: Social and Health Sciences, Duke University Medical Center

"Nevertheless, parents should find this book helpful in dealing with specific problem areas." --Gregory T. Fouts, University of Calgary, Science Books & Films

5.0 out of 5 stars Dealing with a disruptive child? Read this book!, April 13, 2000
By A Customer
Skills Training for Children with Behavior Disorders is wonderful! It contains very clear and concise information and suggestions for any parent (or teacher) who is dealing with a disruptive child. The workbook sheds light on other areas that could be causing the child to act out (such as family behavior and outside support). The worksheets included are helpful in breaking the behaviors down one by work without overwhelming the child all at once, allowing the child to see their progress one step at a time. A wonderful resource for both parent and teacher as they work together to resolve negative behavior and get the child back on track.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have translated this book into Chinese., June 21, 2000
By Shin-Jaw, Chen (Tainan Taiwan) - See all my reviews
I am a child psychiatrist in Taiwan, and I bought this book in 1997 when I participated in the Americam Psychiatric Association Annual Conference. I found this book very practical and helpful to both myself and my clients' parents,so I decided to translate it into Chinese, and finally the Chinese edition had been published on March 1999.I used this book to discuss with clients' parents about how to handle behavior-disordered clients' disruptive behaviors.Parents very much appreciated this book about its convenience, practical procedure, and detailed explanation of "know how". This is the most practical book I have found in Taiwan for working with parents with behavior-disordered children.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too basic for practioners or holders of advanced degrees. Good for parents or teachers. , September 2, 2005
I have an advanced degree and work as a school psychologist and found this book to be way too elementary. It would be a good resource for parents or a beginnng teacher. I gave the book an overall low rating becasue it advertises iteself as a resource for therapists/practioners. If you don't know this stuff, you should not be working with kids as a therapist!
