An extremely valuable resource -- Choice

I used the Guide and its rating system to research my own interest areas and was able to find extensive, useful information.. The Guide provides valuable search tips, suggestions and practical steps to get started in each area -- The Master's Advocate newsletter

Wow. The words "invaluable resource" and "must read" are bandied about quite a bit in book reviews. But this time we mean it!...For anyone interested in roaming the vast plains of mental health information on the Internet, you could not ask for a better compass -- Professional Counselor

Review

"John M. Grohol, part Johnny Appleseed, part Magellan, is known to all of us already online as the guide par excellence to, and often the creator of, the best mental health resources on the Internet. We will value his book for the insight it offers into Dr. Grohol's mental map of this uncharted domain. For those not yet 'connected,' the book is the next best thing to being there. It explains what all the excitement is about, and provides a step-by-step initiation to this new medium which is transforming the way we all live and work." --Gilbert Levin, PhD, Founder/Director, Cape Cod Institute

"For the mental health professional, this directory has hundreds of useful links and tips for finding resources. Librarians and teachers in this field will find this book especially valuable. The author's Website should also keep the information up to date."--American Reference Books Annual

"...invaluable....will receive intense use by any student of mental health studies who uses the computer to search for information." --Reviewer's Bookwatch

PRAISE FOR THE PREVIOUS EDITION
"This book offers thousands of tips for using the Internet to locate information and resources on mental health issues."--Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences

"An excellent practical and useful guide....I used the Guide and its rating system to research my own interest areas and was able to find extensive, useful information. The guide provides valuable search tips, suggestions, and practical steps to get started in each area. I found it particularly helpful in the areas of finding continuing education workshops and getting current information on ADHD...and severe anxiety and panic disorders....An excellent introduction to using the Internet for the mental health professional....The presentation is comprehensive and extensive, allowing the reader easy access to the online world."--The Master's Advocate

"Any library with adequate funds should consider buying two copies of this book, one for reference and one for circulation. Although Grohol has geared his book for the mental health practitioner, it is extremely useful for undergraduate or graduate students, researchers, or librarians in any health-related field. What makes it different from so many other Internet search guides is its extensive coverage of search engines plus an entire chapter on how to put together a successful search strategy. Librarians who teach introductory classes on the Internet will find this information useful and may even want to use some of the author's examples in their own teaching....Even experienced searchers will find tips on how to use search engines effectively and will appreciate the author's candid opinions on which sites are a waste of time....Anyone who wants to find useful sites on the Internet could benefit from this book....Highly recommended for all academic and medical libraries. Public libraries should also purchase the book because of its useful section on patient information."--American Reference Books Annual

"Wow. The words 'invaluable resource' and 'must read' are bandied about quite a bit in book reviews. But this time we mean it! This reference guide is not only simply written and incredibly handy, it's actually fun....For anyone interested in roaming the vast plains of mental health information on the Internet, you could not ask for a better compass."--Professional Counselor

"An extremely valuable resource for any psychology professional who wants to delve into the online world but has not had time to fully explore the electronic realm....The book has a fine balance of form and content...."--Choice

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide to search tools, newsgroups and more!, May 4, 2000
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
The 2000/2001 edition of this invaulable guide explains and evaluates the range of search tools, newsgroups and database available online: while it may prove outdated in a year or to, The Insider's Guide to Mental Health Resources Online will receive intense use by any student of mental health studies who uses the computer to search for information. The Insider's Guide to Mental Health Resources Online is more than a listing service: descriptions of each make it easy to locate just the right site.

1.0 out of 5 stars only for the very computer illiterate, October 25, 2007
Very dissapointing text. Really only for the extremely computer illiterate. If you can operate a search engine and chat with colleagues about available resources this book will not help you at all. It includes the very basics about how to find psych websites, list serves, etc. If you know nothing about finding info on the internet you may want to pick this up. Other than that do not waste your time and money
