Review
"The Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy is an indispensable guide to the field. No where is there a better in-depth description of the full range of approaches to doing therapy with couples. The third edition of this classic is the best yet."--Michael P. Nichols, PhD, author of Family Therapy: Concepts & Methods

"This comprehensive volume gives the best overview of couples therapy that's out there. Not only does it cover all of the major approaches to the treatment of couples, it has the most expert authors writing about the treatments, problems, and populations they know best. Once again, Alan Gurman and the late Neil Jacobson have assembled the definitive volume. There could be no better tribute to Dr. Jacobson, and to the duo's wonderful collaboration over the years."--William M. Pinsof, PhD, The Family Institute at Northwestern University

"Each edition of this classic book is more impressive than the last. The coverage is uniquely comprehensive. The focus is consistently clinical and highly useful. The chapter authors are the best in the field. Have no doubt: this is the definitive text in the couple therapy field."--William J. Doherty, PhD, Marriage and Family Therapy Program, University of Minnesota

"...a fresh and important contribution to the literature. This book is a scholarly, state-of-the-art, overview of the field of couple therapy....I was highly impressed with the uniform excellence of every chapter....each chapter provides an excellent starting point for any clinician or student wishing to learn about that particular area....the definitive text on couple therapy. I consider it mandatory reading for all clinicians wanting to stay abreast of the field of couple therapy. Further, I strongly recommend it for all graduate students and all graduate-level couple therapy courses."--Journal of Family Psychotherapy

"The new Handbook is not just comprehensive; it is encyclopedic. It will be the essential, authoritative resource for anyone interested in couple therapy, whether students, clinicians, or researchers, for years to come."--Child & Family Behavior Therapy

4.0 out of 5 stars Overview of several couple therapies, March 21, 2006
This is a collection of chapters written about couple and marital therapy. The chapters are authored by recognized experts in the different therapies, and contain theoretical background, techniques, and case examples. It provides a general overview of the therapies, without going in great detail about any of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must!, September 11, 2005
For the practicing clinician, this is an invaluable work outlining the prevalent theoretical frameworks in couples therapy. It is interesting and readable, not the dry academic tome the previous reviewer claims it to be. And it actually includes narrative therapy and emotionally focused therapy! two cutting-edge modalities that give us hope the field is finally coming out of the Dark Ages when cognitive-behavioural therapy was the best we had to offer. (No wonder couple therapy has had such poor results!) It does a good job of discussing the basics of the most difficult work a therapist can do, covering many issues couples might have to deal with (see the table of contents). I would wish for more discussion on especially difficult issues such as working with secrets, blended families, high-conflict couples, immigrant/refugee issues, or the impact of trauma generally. Next edition, maybe.
