Editorial Reviews

Review
"I strongly recommend this text. The volume offers practitioners and social work educators an invaluable resource of methods and skills for helping children with challenging life conditions and perilous life situations. With the fully updated second edition, readers can be sure they have the latest information on key topics. This is an excellent and much needed contribution to the contemporary practice literature."--Alex Gitterman, MSW, EdD

"Written by a master clinician and teacher with decades of experience, this volume addresses the challenges of working with children and families that are faced daily by contemporary practitioners, and carefully articulates some of the best approaches to assessment and intervention. Webb sensitively integrates the many facets of practice with children--the child, family, community, school, public and private service delivery systems, and the public policy context. She ably takes the reader through the different ways clinicians can help children and into a variety of circumstances in which children are seen in our ever-changing, sometimes perilous world. This lucidly written second edition is sure to remain a centerpiece of any graduate course on practice with children and a tried-and-true companion for clinicians of all levels."--Luis H. Zayas, PhD, George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis

"In this extensively revised and updated edition of her highly regarded text, Nancy Boyd Webb offers a comprehensive and incisive description of social work practice with children and their families in contemporary society. Among the book's especially impressive features are its coverage of the many different family situations and circumstances facing vulnerable children and youth, its thoughtful consideration of helping methods and processes, and its frequent use of apt case illustrations. This text promotes the education of students at the undergraduate as well as graduate levels, prepares them for the challenges that they will face, and helps them become well-trained and sophisticated practitioners. The author is to be commended for contributing so much to the tasks of instructors, particularly those in child welfare practice courses. Above all, her conviction and enthusiasm about ways of helping children, youth, and families are commendable and inspiring."--Anthony N. Maluccio, DSW, Graduate School of Social Work, Boston College

"This book serves as a comprehensive primer of essential social work practice skills and intervention techniques that take into account and ultimately honor the developmental phases and cognitive abilities of children....Webb's book successfully elucidates the profession of social work's reliance on a holistic approach to understanding and treating psychopathology."--Residential Treatment for Children and Youth

"The book is well written and relatively free of jargon making it a good text book for a beginning social worker....I highly recommend this book. It is a good instructional text for continuing education and as a refresher for someone returning to practice....It is enjoyable as well as educational."--Canadian Social Work

"...a comprehensive and incisive description of social work practice with children and their families in contemporary society....Especially impressive is the author's focus on vulnerable children and youths in traumatic circumstances, such as divorce or out-of-home care; her thoughtful consideration of the processes and methods of directly and indirectly helping children and young people; her evident knowledge of research in the area of child and family services in voluntary as well as governmental agencies; and her frequent use of apt case illustrations that vividly convey sound and effective practice....will clearly help in educating students at the undergraduate and graduate levels and preparing them for the challenges that they will face....Nancy Boyd Webb is to be commended for greatly contributing to the tasks of instructors, particularly those in child welfare practice courses. Above all, her conviction and enthusiasm regarding ways of helping children, youths and families are commendable and inspiring."--Child and Family Social Work

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful, November 17, 2000
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a framework for therapeutic work with kids. It works form the general to the specific within an ecological-developmental framework. The author provides useable assessment tools and moves through each topic using a variety of case examples. I wish it had been my text in practice class in grad school. It is an enjoyable and helpful read!
