Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The anchor of Microsoft's Internet technology architecture is the company's Internet Information Server (IIS). IIS 4.0 is the latest version of this Web server and, just as with the Windows operating systems, Webmasters can rely on the Microsoft Internet Information Server Resource Kit for a well-rounded reference to the product.

This kit is a definitive support guide to IIS deployment and Web application development for IIS Web sites. It covers IIS from a wide variety of angles, including performance tuning, the content-creation life cycle, and management of Internet Service Provider (ISP) functionality. A compilation of the knowledge of the IIS development and support teams, the Resource Kit is written in typical Microsoft manual style--short on liveliness yet methodical and well-researched.

The book begins with an architectural overview of IIS 4.0 and then presents a process for bringing content to the Web. Whether you're planning content or staffing a large-scale publishing project, the kit discusses it, as well as issues related to hardware, network configurations, and performance tuning. Webmasters will find an immense amount of material they can use for site administration.

Particularly thorough is the section on application development, with a strong focus on Active Server Pages (ASP) and database transaction management. Security, legacy database compatibility, and Web site migration are also covered. The CD-ROM included is packed with utilities and components to round out this top-notch guide. --Stephen W. Plain

3.0 out of 5 stars Some parts are good; some terrible, July 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Internet Information Server Resource Kit (Paperback)
I am a Systems Engineer trying to understand things like how to analyze traffic coming into a server and using this analysis to drive some design issues, such as deciding on the hardware and software components (what to buy, architecture issues, security, issues of scaling etc.) Parts of this book discuss those issues (Ch. 3, 4 and 6, if Databases are involved).

However, since this is a book written by committee, some parts are good while others are plain bad. In particular Chapters 5 and 6 (written by John Sudds) are plainly unreadable and not worth wasting your time over. The first four Chapters and the Chapter on Security are worth reading.

The book is informational. If you want a desktop reference as you develope web pages etc., find some other book.

I haven't used the Toolkit as yet. We are in the process of creating a test setup and hopefully the toolkit will come handy.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book will not teach how to administer a 2000 web server, July 23, 2002
This review is from: Microsoft Internet Information Server Resource Kit (Paperback)
First off, the book is dated. IIS 5 is now out, and IIS 4 is a couple years old. Although 5 doesn't differ much from 4, Windows NT does differ from 2000. In addition some of the ASP coding is a little dated (especially, since MS new .NET framework).

Secondly, the book never really takes you step by step on what you have to do to set up a web site. It doesn't go through important things like setting up DNS or DNS strategies. Also left out is anything regarding receiving email (of course that another MS product and another MS book). I guess the book does live up to being a book about IIS 4 -- and only IIS 4. Why the book has to be nearly 600 words about just IIS is beyond me?

Thirdly, some of the resources and tools are just plain useless. I mean who the heck uses the built in traffic analysis? There many programs out there that provide better detailed reporting.

Finally, the really potentially useful information, such as interacting with IIS through VB and ASP, is glossed over. The author, I suppose, figures that you'll learn how to do it on your own.

I bought this book hoping to brush up on skills and maybe pick up on better methods of how to run a MS web server, but this book did not deliver. If you want a book that is overly verbose and can put you to sleep this is it, but if you want to learn how to run a MS web server don't waste your money.

This book fills a void in IIS documentation and the CDs are packed full of useful tools for an IIS4-based web server. A book that is well worth the money!

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful information and CD, but, needs to be updated.
Good book to become familiar with the various concepts and tools. As you read it though you can see it is nearing its usefulness and needs to be updated.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's like watching Independence Day without the SFX
It just scratches the surface of the vast features of IIS4. Doesn't go into detail, doesn't have how-to guides, doesn't serve its purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Overview
This is the documentation that IIS has been lacking. Most significant issues facing web managers are consolidated in one book. Highly recommended.
