Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Freeberg is an off-ice official for the National Hockey League and as such has fulfilled such duties as gatekeeper in the penalty box and goal judge behind the net. From his unique perspective on NHL hockey, he has crafted a pleasantly written if somewhat rudderless professional memoir. This meandering collection of anecdotes is made up of three types of stories: penalty box tales of both famous players and lesser lights who have frequented the "bin" in Anaheim where Freeberg works, accounts of the responsibilities of off-ice officials, and yarns detailing hockey history such as the development of the Zamboni machine. Not essential, but recommended for all popular hockey collections.?John M. Maxymuk, Rutgers Univ. Lib., Camden, NJ

5.0 out of 5 stars Most entertaining hockey book EVER!!, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
I bought this book after reading it's reviews, and I am extremely glad I did. It's not only full of insights into the game, it's players, and officials, but is one of the funniest collection of stories I have read in a long time. And that includes supposed "humor" books, too. I was a big hockey fan before reading the book, but I am an even bigger one now. The only downside is having read this book in the summer it's made it even more difficult to wait for the season to begin. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sin Bin was a blast!, March 3, 2000
By Lauren (western NY) - See all my reviews
I am a HUGE hockey fan and I love anything that will get me closer to the game, besides being on the ice. When I heard of this book, I was so excited. I've always wondered what's going on in the Sin Bin, and what's being said! If you've ever been to an NHL hockey game and sat behind the penelty box this book is for you! I couldn't put this book down when I got it. The author is a brilliant writer and is very entertaining. I loved the different stories of him in the NHL. My favorite story was when he was in Colorado and had to site in that goalkeeper box on wheels and it started rolling backwards. Film at eleven! I can remember reading this in school and cracking up laughing, while it was dead quiet and people looking at me. I couldn't help it though. It was a great book! Buy it if your a hockey fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5(Stars) for Fighting, November 5, 2002
What can I say about this book. At first, I thought it was a good book. As I read on, I began to accept the fact that it was a very good book. By the time I finished, I had come to the conclusion that In the Bin is one of the greatest books to cover any sport, not just hockey. Just a truly amazing look at a few different angles of the game that we don't get to see very often.

Lloyd Freeberg's writing style has more moves than a Mario Lemieux breakaway. I was constantly being amuzed at the different stories he told, he has a great sence of humor and timing. Though the accompaning pictures are in black & white, they are superb. The variety of things Freeberg writes about caught me off gaurd. I thought that the book would focus only on penalty box incidents dealing primarily with goons from around the league. I was pleasantly suprised when I began reading about mascots, superstars, zambonis, goal judges, fans, referees and even arenas. The diversity was not only entertaining, but enlightening as well.

With stories of all types constructed with skill similar to that of Paul Kariya's stick handling, In the Bin delivers as much excitement as an overtime playoff goal. I loved every word of this book and I wouldn't hesitate to read another book by Freeberg, nor will I hesitate to suggest this book to anyone.
