Product Description
Send ’Em South is an adventure story that brings the two conflicting worlds of North and South together. In the years just prior to the Civil War, David Adams grows up in the middle of two worlds. His father is an Irish immigrant who is ridiculed and ignored by the people of Boston. His mother is an abolitionist who has dedicated her life to ending slavery. David, as the son of these two, finds himself an outcast amongst his friends and even his family.

Lisa has been a slave all of her life. Her mother was sold when she was 10 years old. Her father appears to have given up all hope of seeing her mother again. When he takes Lisa’s hand one day and whisks her off the plantation, no one is more surprised than she. Then, with the help of several white and black abolitionists, the pair head north to the city of Boston where they hope to find Lisa’s long lost mother. The only problem is that slave catchers are hot on their trail and are determined to send Lisa and her father back to the plantation. Only a young boy named David Adams stands in their way.

Send ’Em South is a story of love and dedication, hatred, and sacrifice. It is the story of Lisa’s love for her father and the sacrifices he makes for her, of David’s need to find acceptance in the confusing world he lives in, and of bravery that two children can have when surrounded by hatred, deception, and danger.

From the Publisher
Send 'Em South is only the first book in this exciting adventure series. Future books deal with the extremeness of the abolitionist movement, the politics of slavery, the destruction of the countryside, civilian losses, women’s roles in the Civil War, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the reconstruction period, and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. In addition, readers learn about the events at Fredericksburg, Harpers Ferry, Gettysburg, and Antietam!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best kind of book., September 21, 2001

(REAL NAME)
Many times books meant for young people don't have an interest for older adults - like the parents! This book is different. In fact this book begs to be read simultaneously by parents and kids, or read aloud by parents and their kids together. The wealth of opportunity for meaningful discussion of goals, opinions, values, and yes - history - should not be left unused. Send 'Em South is well written and surprisingly suspenseful and interesting. I am a mother with grown sons, but wish I had had this book to share with them as they were growing up.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book, August 27, 2001
By Tara "taramb84" (Dunedin, FL) - See all my reviews
This was an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone. Its around a middle school reading level, but could easily be enjoyed by older students, or anyone interested in the Pre- Civil War. The book is well written, and keeps you wondering what will happen to Lisa and David, until the very end. This book shows that friendship goes beyond race, and but also shows just how cruel people can be to people of other races and nationalities. Overall, I loved the book. I give it a definite five stars.
