Gr 3-4--Short describes the unique physical characteristics, habits, and habitat of the platypus. Color photographs and drawings are used throughout the one- and two-page chapters to amplify the narrative. An unlabeled map shows the animal's range, and a cross-section drawing of its underground burrow illustrates how it builds a dwelling for protection, sleeping, and raising its young. A description of this mammal's habitat includes a mild warning about the importance of protecting creeks, rivers, and lakes. This book provides more information than Toni Eugene's Koalas & Kangaroos: Strange Animals of Australia (National Geographic, 1981; o.p.), which has only one paragraph and two photographs about the platypus. An easy-to-follow introduction to a fascinating animal.

A Kid's Review
You can call me StoryMaker. Don't get me wrong, Mondo Animals: Platypus is a good book that taught me what platypuses eat and what platypuses do. It is nice, but here are my complaints:
1. It is short. (I'm used to Natural World animal books witch are much longer.)
2. Most of the pictures are not-the-best paintings. (They aren't horrible, but I like photos or detailed drawings.)
So overall, it is a great book and if you want to know what platypuses eat and what mom platypuses do, it is great, but you might want something longer and with better pictures. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

The platypus is one of the weirdest creatures on earth and has been my favourite since I was old enough to walk (or so it seems ;)). This book is simple, straight forward, and offers good information as well as pictures of this elusive creature. I bought this book to add to my collection when I was 19 y/o. Doesn't matter what age you are, this is a great book. =)

There are great pictures and a large amount of facts about the platypus in this film. However, I should have taken a hint from the name of the series - "Mondo Animals" - that this is a children's book. There's nothing wrong with that; it just should have been clearer from the description. The language is extremely simplistic. I can imagine a 4th or 5th-grader using this book as a basis for a report. But if you're looking for an adult-level treatment of this subject, keep looking.
