Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7?Like other entries in the series, this photo-essay describes the diversity of the country's population and focuses on the lives of its children. Starting in the north with the mountain-dwelling Lac Viet people, Lorbiecki winds her way south, introducing readers to Black Thai, Hmong, and Cham cultures. Along this journey, readers encounter children living in villages, on farms, in coastal villages, around wetlands, and in urban apartments. The numerous full-color photographs enhance a text that is rich with historical and cultural details. Because this book covers such a broad spectrum, it is of necessity an introduction to the country and doesn't contain sufficient information for in-depth reports. Patricia Norland's Vietnam (Gareth Stevens, 1991; o.p.) provides a better perspective on one region of Vietnam, as it follows the life of one child and her family. However, for those libraries looking for a broad overview, this title will make a welcome addition.?Shirley N. Quan, Orange County Public Library, Stanton, CA
