5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful supplement to Trask et al., April 8, 1999
By paul.roth@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (Dunedin, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This book provides a wonderful supplement to the standard texts on the Spanish American War which tend to include few if any photographs. This book contains photographs of an unbelievable variety of relevant material: people, gravestones and monuments, weapons, ships (many pictures of the ships, but only one of the infamous balloon?), contemporary sheet music, newspapers, reunions, memorabilia, etc. The only omission I could detect was the absence of Jimmy Hare's photographs of the conflict. For those of you who have seen the recent movie "Rough Riders", look at it again with this book by your side and compare how little resemblance there is between most of the movie actors and the historical characters they are meant to depict!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Book, May 22, 2000
By John Galt (Wheeler, Alabama) - See all my reviews
I highly recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in this important phase of American history. Many unique photographs. Nice, readable historical sections. To add an extra comment to that of the gentleman from New Zealand in review number one (discussing the Rough Riders film), compare the photographs of Joseph Wheeler to the portrayal by Gary Busey. I'm a Gary Busey fan, but really,... Wheeler was 5'5" and 120lb!

I work a great deal with the Wheeler Home in N. Alabama, which naturally has a wealth of Span-Am information tied to it, and I recommend this book to EVERYONE!

5.0 out of 5 stars The source for photos of the SAW!!!, November 29, 1998
By A Customer
This book is a great source for technical information on the U.S. Forces that engaged the Spanish in what was refered to as a "Splendid little War." The period photos of troops in stateside camps and in battle in Cuba will be welcomed by today's SAW Living Historian. Also included are photos of museum displays, and actual Reenactment groups.
