1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly outdated design advice, July 20, 1999
By A Customer
While I admire Ms. LeMay's writing style, I am afraid that her approach to web page design is terribly outdated. This book focuses on creating what David Siegel would call "first generation" web pages; i.e. simple, flat layouts on gray backgrounds, with very little visual appeal. Her advice on which tags to use (<Hx>, <EM>, <STRONG>, <HR>) only reinforces how out-of-touch she is -- no one codes like this anymore. Where is the coverage on how to layout your pages using tables and frames? Where is the advice on using the <FONT> tag to gain greater control over your typography? Every screen-shot in this book looks like something from 1995 (that's a LOOOOOOONG time ago in web years!). There is nothing here that can't be found for free on the Web, in one of those online HTML for beginners guides.

If you want your web site to look like a relic from the dawn of the Web, read this book. If you would prefer to have modern, professional-looking web pages, I recommend "HTML Publishing on the Internet" by Brent Heslop, followed by "Creating Killer Web Sites" or "HTML Artistry".

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential For New Designers, October 20, 1999
By Wendy Ice "delamare" (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews
When I decided to design a web site for my company Bad Monkey Productions, I wanted to use code rather than relying on software. I had absolutely no experience with computer language or code and was understandably intimidated. Laura Lemay's book rescued me. I receive many compliments on my site and I owe it all to this book. It was the perfect guide when I was a beginner and a handy reference now that I have a little experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book, November 23, 2005
This book is fantastic for the individual who wants to learn HTML quickly. Although it does not delve into the advanced topics too far, it is a good starting point. Lemay's style is straight forward and will have you writing web pages in no time. With this book and CGI 101/102 you could be designing and programming for the web in a basic capacity in a week, but by no means stop there!
