Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-Any teen looking for audition material will love this book. The short monologues cover a range of genres from comedy to dramatic coming-of-age pieces. "Up All Night" is about a girl who becomes extra-energized on caffeine before a big test, and "New and Improved" deals with a teen who's about to go through breast-implant surgery. More serious monologues include "Missed Opportunity," about not having the grades to get into college; "Coming Out," in which a teen confides to a friend that she is a lesbian; and "Using," in which a boy experiments with drugs. The wording is clear, concise, and to the point in all of the selections. Lamedman provides both boys and girls with monologues tailored to their needs and with stories that allow them to use their acting abilities to the fullest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and Fascinating Monologues, November 26, 2003
By A Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this terrfic book. It amazes me how many different situations (both funny and dramatic) Ms. Lamedman came up with to illustrate the many experiences and facets of teenage life. The writing is crisp and to the point, and the monologues realistically portray some of the conflicts and joys of teenage life. Many of the monologues have great (and sometimes surprising) "punch lines" at the end (I especially enjoyed "The Facial and "No Smoking"). And more than a few of the monologues drew me into the situation and made me think, or laugh, or feel in my gut the emotion of the character who is speaking. I like to read Acknowledgements in books, and I noticed that Ms. Lamedman thanks two nephews for inspiring her and helping her to work out kinks in some of the monologues. I thought that was a lovely sentiment. She must really have her pulse on the life of young people today. There is obviously dramatic content in this book, and I tried to read the lines as an actor would. But I also thought as I read the monologues how PARENTS of kids who are not interested in acting might BENEFIT from reading the book. In many of the monologues (like "Coming Out" and "The Shopping Trip") the character asks for help, understanding, love, or empathy. A parent reading these might tend to think about how difficult a time teenagers sometimes have growing up. It might give parents ideas on how to open dialogues with their kids on different critical subjects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, July 10, 2004
By A Customer
I recently read The Ultimate Audition Book for Teens 4-111 One-Minute Monologues, and I really really loved it. Especially the comedic ones! My friends and I also agreed that "The Crush" was our favorite, because we have a specific friend that relates to that. But overall, this whole book was enjoyable, and I'm planning to use selections at my next audition! So thanks! With a monologue from this book, now I actually feel as if I might just get the lead!
