Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

You must pass the NT Workstation exam (70-073) in order to become a Microsoft Certified Software Engineer (MCSE). Though it's not the hardest test in the battery and much of the material on it overlaps with the contents of other exams, you'll be well served by boning up for this test. Exam Prep: NT Workstation 4 can assist you.

Everything Microsoft prescribes for study appears in this book. You ought to be familiar with a lot of it if you've used NT before. First, the authors cover the installation of NT Workstation (including preliminary hardware qualifications) and the subsequent establishment of users, groups, policies, and other configuration options. Later chapters discuss the particular subsystems that NT Workstation comprises, including the file systems, security managers, network architectures, and printing. The book covers enough TCP/IP to enable you to connect an NT Workstation box to a network. The guide also explores important Remote Access Services in detail. Throughout, the authors explain subjects with a readable mix of prose and procedures.

Those who already know NT Workstation but want to get a feel for the exam itself will appreciate the multiple-choice review questions and exercises (the NT equivalent of essay questions) that wrap up each chapter. Answers to the questions and suggested solutions to the exercises appear on the companion CD-ROM. The CD-ROM also includes excellent quiz software that simulates the actual exam format. --David Wall

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter garbage!, August 23, 1999
By A Customer
Not a bad layout, but the technical inaccuracies and wrong or mismatched answers to end-of-chapter questions make this book a frustration for students. Some of the problems include mention of non-existent control panel applets, confused and inaccurate explanations of Master Boot Records/partition boot sections, and more.

2.0 out of 5 stars A piece of garbage for MCP exam prep, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This is one of the "junk book" I have ever read in my life. It is true that it gives everything you need to pass the exam, but almost 60% of the content are not covered (on the exam). Worse than that, the book doesn't even mention a word "exam tips" to emphasize what to be aware of when you are writing the exam. This book is inaccurate -- I found conflicts between the "exam prep" questions and the actual content of the book -- and it is extremely lengthy (616 pages in total and on average 30 pages / chapter). I personally belive that only the "Hands-on practice", "Case study" and the CD-ROM are parts that are useful only. If you really want to pass the exam, look for other resources such as Exam Cram (from the same publisher). This book should be named "NT Workstation 4, a reference guide" rather than "NT Workstation 4: Exam Prep".

5.0 out of 5 stars Passed with just this!, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
This was enough for me to pass with 830. It took me about 2 months. I cannot recommend it enough. It is designed for passing the exam and does not skirt around the subject. I wish I had got the network essentials one for the previous exam.
