Someone came up to me at a user group meeting. "Hey!" he said with some sense of discovery. "I just saw your book at Barnes & Noble at the cutout rack!" To this day, I've never figured out why he thought that this news would make me happy.

With one sort-of exception, all my books are out of print. (Teach Yourself Rexx found a new life, re-released under another name, but with only Bill's name on it.) I signed up to write a book in 2003, but before it got underway I had accepted a new editorial job... so I let it go. I haven't written a book in more than ten years; instead, I've been writing and editing articles. LOTs of articles.

One of the lessons I learned from all this is not to bet your career on any one vendor's technology. I can specialize in software development or operating systems, because those will always be around. But you'll never see me become the Tablet PC goddess or the Wizard of Visual C++.
