Editorial Reviews

True enough, you can get the contents of this book on the Web from the Linux Document Pages site. Still, administrators of Linux systems (particularly networks of Linux machines) will appreciate having this printed edition on hand for easy reference. The authors of Linux and its suite of utilities have done a remarkably good job of documenting their work, and the two white papers bound in Linux System Administration White Papers make enjoyable and informative reading.

Olaf Kirch's contribution, The Linux Network Administrator's Guide, covers the basics of setting up and configuring a TCP/IP network among Linux computers. Kirch's document includes a great deal of prose that explains how Linux networking works in a broad sense, as well as plenty of configuration-file listings and tables that list commands, flags, and arguments. You'll want your machine close at hand to try out the concepts Kirch describes. The Linux System Administrator's Guide, written by Lars Wirzenius, makes up about a third of this volume. It deals with how Linux thinks of storage media, the directory tree, memory, and users. Mostly, it provides conceptual explanations that will help novice administrators understand command references, but there's also a small amount of how-to information on specific administrative tasks. --David Wall

Topics covered: Creation and configuration of TCP/IP networks of Linux boxes, including hardware, TCP/IP configuration, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) setup, the Network Information System, the Network File System (NFS), and various servers (mail and news, but not Web). Administration coverage includes user account management, backups, the file system, and effective use of init.

Book Description
Covers files systems, directories, boots and shutdowns, printing, network compatibility, network logins, security, user accounts, data back ups, and more. Diagrams the kernel and how it related to network operation. Covers TCP/IP networking, electronic mail, hardware issues, and network management and configuration.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money, April 5, 2000
By Jason Hiner, MCSE, Network+ (Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews
Great material, especially for administrators who are fairly new to Linux (and, let's face it, there are a lot of us out there). You can get the material online, but the book is great as a reference manual while you're at a terminal session.
