Reviewed with Cari Meister's Mosquitos.
Gr. 2-4. These books in the new Checkerboard Science and Nature Library: Insects series introduce children to the world of insects. From the often maligned but misunderstood mosquito to the beautiful butterfly, each volume offers brief discussions of physical structure, growth, diet, habitat, enemies, and relationship to humankind. Exceptionally nice color photographs and simple graphics will draw browsers. Unfamiliar words, highlighted in colored type, are redefined in a glossary; there are a few "fun facts" appended, as well as Internet sites that kids can use to find out more. A nicely designed, well-thought-out series that will give kids basic information. Heather Hepler
