Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The 1981 edition (now out of print) of this little classic on puppy rearing was a word-of-mouth best seller. This substantially revised and expanded edition benefits from an additional decade of observation of puppy behavior by its authors and includes effective, up-to-date methods for educating puppies to become good canine citizens. Along with Job Michael Evans's The Evans Guide for Housetraining Your Dog (Howell, 1987), this is required reading for new puppy owners. Whether the copy still in circulation is battered and gnawed or the book slipped by the first time around, every public library should acquire this new edition, and academic libraries should seriously consider it for its insights into canine behavior. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but better one is out there, January 16, 2003
By SBL (Albuquerque, NM United States) - See all my reviews
This book was an okay book. It covers all major areas of puppy development, looks at training and problems in an elementary way, and uses nice black and white pictures for illustration. I find that it does rely rather heavily on food as reward. I liked this book better than the Monks of Skete's Art of Raising a puppy because it's more practical, yet I think that you are even better of if you purchase Kilcommens Good owners, great dogs. Though a bit more expensive, you get what you pay for. To me, dog training books need to have the potential to be used daily as a guide. I consulted this book maybe 3 times, while I use the Kilcommens book almost every other day.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best out there, April 3, 2002
I am a novice dog owner and I have to say this book has helped me tremendously with the most important period of the dog's life- puppyhood. This is my favorite "puppy guide" in my large library of puppy and dog training books I have bought over the last year. All I can say is wow! If you have been searching for a good book so that you can raise a new family member and best friend look no further because this is the book for you. It is extremely imformative and easy to understand, a must for anyone bring a puppy into their home.

5.0 out of 5 stars The information was outstanding., September 7, 1999
By A Customer
This book had everything any person needs to know if they are getting a puppy. The issues it touches are ones I've never seen touched before in a format so easy to understand. It's invigorating that someone actually put it into words and published it. This is the puppy bible. For anyone getting, or considering getting a puppy this is the first book they need to read.
