Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
For a sophisticated view of networking design concepts that goes from lofty to granular in the blink of an eye, Network Design and Case Studies is a sure winner. This mammoth entry in Cisco's growing collection of reference books provides equal parts academic theory and practical application.

The first half of the book deals exclusively with design, starting with an explanation of the three types of networks (campus, wide area, and remote connections). The book outlines the design trends governing those networks today and explains the devices used to create them and their functions, as well as effective ways to integrate the three. The remaining chapters veer off into more specific network types, such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Internet Protocol (IP), and Switched LAN, and the equipment and protocols best suited for those situations.

The second half of this volume is dedicated to real-word problem solving. The 11 "case study" chapters focus on particularly sticky issues--such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) redistribution, reducing Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) traffic in Novell Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) networks, and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) broadcast flooding--and propose configuration solutions to fix them. As usual, this books holds the requisite flood of appendices; however, in this instance the "Reference and Recommended Reading" entry is undoubtedly the most useful. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
Cisco Systems offers levels of certification that correspond directly to individuals' particular needs and where they are in their career development. CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) is one of these certification programs; it is viewed as the highest level of networking expert certifications in the industry. In addition to the baseline internetworking knowledge covered in the recommended training courses, Cisco suggests that the key to success on the CCIE exam is several years of practical field experience combined with a structured self-study program. CCIE Fundamentals: Network Design and Case Studies, Second Edition provides a comprehensive collection of configuration scenarios and design recommendations tailored for CCIE preparation. Each chapter is a self-contained solution that presents insights into the implementation of practical networking strategies flexible enough to fit a variety of situations.

4.0 out of 5 stars The information in the book is extremely useful, October 14, 1998
By A Customer
I was very exited to purchase this book, however, I became quit disappointed after I thumbed through the pages and realized that it was the same information found on their website. I am returning the book and leaving Cisco an email to express my disappointment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not CCIE stuff, October 28, 1999
An O.K book for starters and who want to get to know a bit about N/W design. But, it's too non-technical to be of any use to designers. Definitely, not CCIE level. Not worth buying if you can get same info from cisco web-site

4.0 out of 5 stars Case studies - nothing more., November 13, 2000
By Ruslan Moskalenko (Lafayette, CA United States) - See all my reviews
It's really just a case studies book. If you want to look at typical examples how people use Cisco equipment - it's a right choice. But if you want to dig deeper in some particular area, or if you want to learn networking background you should read something else.

I like this way to explain purpose of this book. Let's imagine you met a good Cisco guy and he let you stand behind him and watch how he does his job for a little bit. You can grab some tricks, get some vision of the process, but he is not trying to teach you. It's a good addition to the strong theoretical background but not a replacement.
