The extensive use of configuration examples and lab scenarios will be attractive to anyone searching for a comprehensive reference guide for ATM internetworking using Cisco routers and switches.

From the Back Cover

Master ATM implementation on Cisco networksAsychronous Transfer Mode (ATM), an internationally standardized, integrated solution for all traffic types-voice, data, and video-provides a scalable, high-speed network architecture ideal for today's constantly evolving multimedia technologies and the demands that come with that evolution. With the current convergence of IP and ATM networks and applications, the flexibility of Campus and WAN implementation, and an architecture that provides a perfect fit for the integration of voice and data networks, ATM has established itself as a viable technology for the long term. However, ATM is also one of the least understood networking technologies available today. Cisco ATM Solutions provides the information necessary to understand, design, deploy, and configure multifunctional ATM networks.Derived in part from the official Cisco instructor-led course, Cisco Campus ATM Solutions, and updated and enhanced with technology advancements and tested lab scenarios, Cisco ATM Solutions provides you with a practical, easy-to-understand explanation of the complex principles of ATM technology and its internetworking methods. Beyond obtaining knowledge for the CCIE(r) lab, this book educates you on ATM concepts that can be applied to any vendor. Cisco ATM Solutions establishes a foundation with a basic understanding of ATM networking concepts and terminology and follows through with a wealth of configuration examples and hands-on scenarios that enable you to master configuration of Cisco ATM router interfaces, LightStream(r) 1010 ATM switches, and LAN Emulation (LANE) services.Cisco ATM Solutions is your definitive self-study resource for understanding ATM and how to implement it as your networking solution.Master the fundamental concepts of ATM, including the ATM reference model, ATM traffic and network management, LANE, and MPOALearn the functionality and implementation of ATM-associated features by Cisco ATM edge devices with a focus on ATM interfaces, circuit emulation services, multiprotocol encapsulation, Classical IP and ARP over ATM, NHRP, and LANE and MPOA implementationUnderstand how to implement the ATM cloud itself through detailed information on the features, functions, and configuration of Cisco's campus ATM switch-the LightStream 1010Apply the concepts you've learned through a detailed series of labs concentrating on LANE, MPOA, LightStream 1010 configuration, and other ATM-associated featuresCisco Systems(r), Inc., is the leading global supplier of internetworking solutions, including routers, LAN and ATM switches, dial-up access servers, and network management software. 4.0 out of 5 stars Best ATM book I've seen, or read., February 23, 2001
By Randall Raus (Seal Beach, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ms. Pildush both loves ATM, and believes in it. However, she is also a realist, and clearly aware of how well positioned ATM's competitors are. I found this highly technical book hard to put down, because it articulated a viewpoint. In an understated and very professional way she makes a strong case for ATM vs. Gigabit Ethernet, and ATM vs. IP over Sonet.

Still, there were a couple of minor disappointments. Firstly, I didn't get a clear picture of the physical network landscape. I would like someone to draw a map--either a nationwide or global map--that lays out existing wide area networks (ATM, Frame Relay, etc.), and clearly shows what their role is. Secondly, although she does say she prefers ATM as the protocol for DSL, there's almost no discussion of DSL. If ATM becomes the protocol of choice for ADSL, and Ethernet for cable modems, wouldn't the total amount of data strongly affect the overall competition?

There's discussion of enumerable routers (why am I not surprised?), and many details (standards, layered architectures, etc.), but even with all the detail, the material seems effortlessly presented, and is easily understood. On balance, a fine job.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid book on ATM & its implementation on Cisco equipment, June 17, 2002
By S. Brown (St.Louis, Mo. United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In 1997 I found myself configuring an ATM/SONET based WAN, with no documentation to turn to other than forum White Papers. What I would have given for this book then!

Having read a number of ATM books now, I can say that this is one of the better ones. The writing is relatively clear, and it moves quickly from topic to topic. In addition to the 560+ pages of core text, the book has hundreds of pages of lab exercises and with detailed solutions, and a thick glossary.

On the whole this book isn't so golden that I would rank it among the crown jewels of Cisco Press (i.e. the Routing TCP/IP series) but it is a solid book, and covers precisely what the title suggests that it does. If you had to read just ONE book on ATM, you could do worse than to pick this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book for anyone interested in ATM, December 14, 2000
By George Morton (Plantation, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
I was thrown into a situation a week ago where I need to come up to speed very quickly in ATM topologies. Cisco ATM Solutions answered all of my questions.

The step-by-step introduction to the ATM design made for easy for me to brush-up on ATM principals, and the back of the book with actual designs was great.

This book is perfect for the first time ATM'er as well as the seasoned CCIE. A must have in anyone's telephony technology libary.
