Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Alexander, editor-in-chief of Prevention magazine, has compiled the testimonies of people who have "won the fat war." Her approach to motivating readers to lose weight and take charge of their lives is extremely effective. The first chapter is entitled the "Ten Commandments of Weight Loss." While these rules may not be new approaches to weight loss, they are helpful: the first commandment is to believe in yourself; the third is to eat more small meals per day versus three large meals; and the obvious fifth is to engage in an active lifestyle. The subsequent chapters are composed of testimonies grouped together by subjects, such as "feed your body right" and "end emotion-driven eating." These inspiring real-life stories of men and women--from all walks of life--are followed by what the author calls "winning action"; she points out how readers can apply the book's secrets of success to their own personal battles with the bulge. While Alexander does not include diet secrets, sample menus or exercise regimens, these stories provide the encouragement needed to get readers on the road to healthier bodies. (Feb.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational title!, February 8, 2000
By A Customer
I was somewhat skeptical about this book. I figured it would be filled with pithy little sayings but I was delighted to find some true inspiration. From people who have struggled to lose 10 pounds to one woman who has lost 400 pounds, these people have been there and know what it takes to be successful. I think perhaps the most helpful thing I gleaned from this book was that each person found a different thing that helped them to find their weight-loss success. For some it was discovering an anchor, for others it was facing the emotional reasons behind their eating. It showed me that there isn't one right answer for all of us - we each need to find what works for us. I highly recommend this title to those who are looking for motivation. I know I will pick this book up and flip through it whenever I need a little push in the right direction!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, motivational book in bite size morsels!, November 12, 2000
What I was looking for was something to motivate me to keep on with my diet and fitness program. When I sent for Anne Alexander's book, I was actually expecting to be disappointed, because so many diet books are very rigid, no matter what their title suggests! Not so with this book. It is packed with short, half page accounts of key things each person did to lose weight. It may have been taking a dance class for exercise, walking someone else's dog, joining a weight loss group, listening to books on tape, you name it. I found it exciting to see that there are so many different ways to accomplish the goal of weight loss. I feel like I have a pretty decent imagination, and that I've heard of, or even tried, just about everything, but this book had some really neat tips that I wouldn't have thought of. This is not an instructional book. It is a way to help you see that weight loss can work for YOU, as the individual you are. The people profiled were from all walks of life, and I am pretty sure just about every age bracket. I am really enjoying the short bites of information, and don't feel the need for pictures or long explanations. This is, I feel, primarily a motivational book, designed to jump start your brain so you can thing outside the box and see fitness and weightloss in a whole new way. I've been carting mine to the gym because it's perfect for my crosstraining routines.

3.0 out of 5 stars Win the Fat War: 145 Real Life Secrets to 100% Weight Loss, February 24, 2000
By Janet A. (Enid, OK USA) - See all my reviews
I saw this book referred to on the Oprah Show and thought it would be a great inspirational tool to have around while battling the weight. When I received this book I was impressed with the success stories it contain, but was terribly disappointed that there were no pictures of the people who had successfully won the battle. It is always more inspiring to see what a change there is in people once they have lost their unwanted pounds. Great stories, but would have been much better if they would have contained before and after pictures.
